Heavy Duty Headlight Harness?

Post by In FORD we trust »

Another question. Has anyone tried the HD Headlight Harness from LCM $29.95 claims to make your headlights brighter? Does this work and how complicated is it to do? Should i get the Euro Halogens while I'm at it? Is there a better supplier? Looks like I'll be waiting on my carpet for 3 or 4 weeks , i might as well start another small project. Thanks, Tim

By putting in larger wire you can support brighter lights(more current) I had a 69 that had the 18A CB in the light switch that cut halogens out. I put two ice cube relays under the hood one for low and one for high. I put 12 AWG from the bat terminal Block I added under the hood and fed it to both relays. I used the low beam side of the headlights to trigger one relay and the high beam side to the other relay. The wires and connectors at the lights were a pain. I used just spade terminals instead of the 3 terminal connector so I could get heavier 12awg wire to the light. The ground also must be larger.

I thought this would be of more interest to everyone? I'm going to try it. I think i will get some kind of light metering device to measure before and after so i can get measured results! Tim

The headlight harness upgrade alone will do wonders at night time.
Add in some halogen lamps and you will be amazed how much light you have at night.

From the circuit point of view, the factory harness is like filling a pool with a small garden hose. The heavy duty harness would be like filling with a fire hose.

There are several posts archived here about this upgrade, somewhere. There use to be a guy here who fabricated and sold a upgraded harness for the headlights too....

Highly recommended upgrade. Your gonna like it.

Been discussed a lot here... http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... 11&t=36143 It makes a big difference... If you read through there about page 4 or 5 some of the members used the LMC kit. :2cents:

Well i got my LMC harness and the quality seems ok, BUT! Knowing what i know now i would have ordered from 390nut. The harness from LMC is totally made in Japan or ??? I can't read the writing. and my Euro Halogen headlights are made in Taiwan. and the YELLOW wrapping looks like crap to me. I will install this but I am all about MADE IN USA!!!! I'll let you all know how it turns out for me. Tim

Let me know how it goes! I'm debating on this myself. I've never had problems seeing at night but I thing the bright white lights look good on any car.

Hey guys! I finally got to go back to work, so I'm not at home for a while. I did however look at this upgrade and I got gun shy. Everything looked pretty simple except, I didn't like the size of the power source wire connectors and I'm not sure about one of the plugs. I think the one plug in question hooks to the plug that goes on the back of the headlight now. Does that make sense? And should the power connections be fused? I was going to hook the power supply up to the battery side of the cellinoid and the connectors are not big enough for that.I just don't want to mess anything up. Any Advice? :?

I used the kit from LMC with the Euro headlights they sell. Was fairly easy to install. The instructions are good for starting a fire or paper airplane  . If I remember correctly I had to trim the back of the headlight buckets so the lens would fit. I got rid of the yellow stuff and replaced with black. Lights are now very bright. Been installed almost a year with no problems.

Just re read your post....I don't remember there being any fuse in the system. Maybe I should put one in :? What happens when the relay sticks?

You unplug the relay to get the lights to go out. Then the next day you replace the relay.

As for a fuse, yeah I'd have one on the feed side of the relay.

Q: What would happen if you wreck at night and the power wires leading to the headlights are smashed and short out?
A: Hopefully the wire would heat up enough to break the connection. But a Fire none the less would be likely.

A breaker would be more suited for headlight power.
