I have seen speedometer cables where the outside sheath was too long. When everything is bolted down it allows the inner cable to walk back and forth so to speak.
As far as what gear to use hit the pull a parts and pick up every speedo gear you see. They are usually only a $1 or 2 and most times the cashiers won't even charge you. I have picked up about 10 that way. If you just walk around the car or truck and look on the ground you'll find one. Look for a truck that has had the tranny pulled and the speedo cable will just be hanging down.
Get several different ones, get your friend's GPS, put a gear on and give it a try. Real soon you will figure out which gear you need. BE careful to get the gears with the same tooth direction as yours. They are marked on the ends with the number such as a 17r or 17R.
Tire diameter makes a big difference. I went from 235's to 31-10.50's and made me about 2 mph wrong.
