Neutral Safety Switch & Reverse Lights

Post by ToughOldFord »

Most of you know some time ago I swapped out my C6 for an NP435. I still have my A/T column in the truck, plan to leave it in there and just pull the shifter and indicator off, and the back up lights and NSS are still wired to the column. If I'm not mistaken I believe there is just a bypass that plugs into the harness to override the NSS in manual shift trucks. If I'm correct, where does this bypass plug in?
And then the backup lights, I have the switch in the NP with two wires coming out of it. Where do I disconnect from the column and hook these wires up?
TIA!

TOF,

You will unplug the NSS from the column and plug in a jumper in its place. Here Fordman has a pic of one in this post http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... ty#p404289 then in the engine compartment around the steering column you will see a plug like this with a jumper on it, remove this jumper and then run the wires to the switch on the trans like in the second pic.

the bypass plug plugs into where the nss unplugs. the backup light switch for the manual trans comes out of the two pronged plug on the drivers inner fender up by the firewall. you will see a short red wire bypassing the plug. it plugs into itself. just unplug the two wire bypass and plug you manual trans plug into that plug. here are some pictures.

Another idea for the NSS is rigging a switch up to the clutch. So that the engine won't start unless you push the clutch pedal in like the newer vehicles have. Just a thought.

I picked up the NSS bypass and the transmission B/U wires from Pick N Pull today. Hopefully I'll get this finished soon, but I'm working 6 day weeks all month so spare time will be limited.

I got to this a lot sooner than I expected. I had some time yesterday afternoon and installed the wiring. I now have functioning back up lights again. :woohoo:

THEN I figured I'd install those metal armrest anchors. Got the armrest off, and then realized it'd be a good time to replace the messed up window regulator with the replacement I bought years ago. Yep, here we go.... replaced the regulator, got the metal anchors in, got it all buttoned back up.

I had a couple of errands to do in town so I figured I'd take the truck for a spin. Man, every dunghead in town was on the road, I got cut off more times... and I don't mean the getting in line in front of me cut off, I mean the a-holes just hadda make a left turn and that crappy looking old Ford truck just can't possibly be there coming at me kind of cut off. :x I even left some of my tires on the pavement on the first one. I was starting to get really ticked off so I surrendered and went home before I shoved a Camper Special up someone's a$$. (Even now, a new day and I'm cooled off the thought of feeding an import to my Ranger brings a smile to my face.) :D
