Alternators are very simple creatures. All the ones I've ever seen at least. If you take it apart, the brushes will jump out of the brush holder but are attached, you won't loose them. The springs are not attached and can fly out of sight. They usually don't but you need to watch out for them that you don't loose them. When you're ready to reasemble the altenator push the spring and brush back in the holder and insert a paper clip or something like that in the small hole (you'll see them) through the outside of the alternator case. That holds the brushes in place till you have everything bolted back together. Just don't forget to remove the paper clips or it won't charge. I know from experience.

I use plastic or wood toothpicks so I don't damage the brushes.

i couldn't find any holes before or after i pulled it apart. i almost lost one spring. and i thought it would come apart differently. i think i may be trashing this now. i can't get to the back of the bolt unless i take both nuts off from the outside. how nice.

The two slip ring brushes are way easier than the 4 starter commuter brushes.

I don't know about you but I like learning new stuff and I would take it apart to see if I can fix it. If you can't fix it, at least you've learned something. It really isn't a big deal to take it all apart and put back together, I'm sure you could do it. One thing to look for is the various issolators on the bolts. Give it a try. :2cents:

Be careful on those pass through bolts they have been known to shred the other side where they hook up or damage the insulation on the pass through isolator and cause a short now or sometime later.

well that was what i was tring to avoid. but it was too late. the stuck nuts that were jambed together had turned around on me and broek the little wire that was hooked to it. i can probably fix it if i can get the nuts off. or i can take two alternators and make one good one. this one just has a real nice clean case so i wanted to keep it. i guess i will do something in the future.

Those things broke at less than 10,000 miles I got so tired of hassling with an alternator rebuilds at ford I would dump some grey sand in them and turn them in as frozen or almost frozen. Rebuilding a alternator was 38 minutes, change one was 12 minutes. It only took one broken wire to exceed the 38 minutes and go from 42 an hour to 12.50 an hour on the job.
