Installing ignition
How do you put the ignition back together? I remember taking it apart with a paper clip and such when i tore the truck down. Now it is going back together... How do i put the cylinder deal back into the outer ignition assembly???

Re: Installing ignition
Good afternoon Ryan,
Would it be helpful if I posted the section on installing the ignition switch from the 1972 Truck Shop Manual?
I'm not sure if you already have access to a shop manual, so I don't know if this would help or not.
It's just two pages so it wouldn't be any trouble for me to do that, if it might help!

Re: Installing ignition
'Afternoon Ryan,
I took a closer look, and it appears that only a small subset of those two pages pertains to installing an ignition switch in F-series trucks! Here's that section from page 33-71-2 of the Ford, 1972 Truck Shop Manual:

Re: Installing ignition
When I did mine, I had to give it a rap with a plastic hammer to get it to seat. Works perfectly.

Re: Installing ignition
Ok i just now am trying to install this thing and it is not working...
First of all I have no idea which way to turn it for accessory because i have no idea which way is the top or bottom of the cylinder. I also don't know which part is the top and bottom of the bigger part (That the key cylinder slides into). I tried just about every way though. I slipped the key/cylinder into the bigger piece and turn it both ways, it slipped in farely far, but i can't turn the key either way or fully seat it.
It's starting to bug me...

Re: Installing ignition
whats the deal. i cant get any of these to come apart now. i tried four of them. now my finger hurts fom turning the pick and the key. ok inside of the switch is a wire. the wire is a soild wire that coems close together at the top. it is like a channel in between the wire. that is where the key tumbler goes in at. just line that up and push in and turn to the right. i just freaking did this a few days ago too.

Re: Installing ignition
ok ryan I replaced mine 3 times in the last 2 days (don't ask why its a long story) on the cylinder (the portion the key slips into) theres a small pin hole (that goes up towards the dash) before you slip the cylinder into the ignition you have to insert the key, then insert a paper clip or simular sized object into the pin hole and turn the key counter clock wise while holding the bottom of the cylinder. you now can remove the paper clip. you should now be able the insert the key and cylinder into the ignition comletely and simply turn the key to secure the cylinder into the ignition. I have a couple cylinders and ignitions and I have discovered that the new lock cylinders do not fit into the old ignitions without modification. I had to trim the flat plug on the base of the lock cylinder in order for it to fit into my ignition.
the only way you will get the lock into the ignition is if you return the cylinder to the postion it came out of it at with the paper clip also make sure if you moved the igtion switch with a screw driver to test start it or anything like that that you return it to the same position.

Re: Installing ignition
I just fooled with this stupid thing for half an hour and just now it fell into pieces. wow. GREAT...
You said i you can test start the truck by turning the slot inside the outer piece? I guess a screw driver is my new key.

Re: Installing ignition
a new lock cylinder isn't exspensive and you can buy it as a stand alone unit with the key for it at that point you can either key the other key for the door locks or have them rekeyed by a locksmith to the new key. I personally am familiar enough with lock that I was able to rekey my own locks rather easily.
