How big a hydraulic press?

Post by 1972F100 »

First job it is needed for is to rebuild my recently acquired t18.

Let's just assume I'll need one for the common jobs in fixing up our bumps.

Is this big enough? How big is big enough?

I have a similar HF press, except that it's a 12-ton, for only a few bucks more. I'd suggest getting that one instead.

:yt:
12 ton is a nice size for a home shop,it will do most bearings/bushings.In my years in the machine shop the press scrapped more parts
than the other machines combined, the 12 ton press is not as easy to break things as it is in a larger press.
In general if it does not move with 12 tons it needs heat or a different setup in the press.
Be careful when you press on shafts if they are not in straight or your setup fails/shifts you can end up WEARING it,they come out like a bullet!

Depends on the kingpin and the prior maintenance (or lack thereof) to it. Many folks have been able to remove kingpins with nothing more than a ballpeen hammer and large punch, so in those cases the press would work great. Then again, I've heard of instances where removing kingpins stressed a 25-ton press. But I'd say in most cases, the 12-ton would work fine.

be careful with these.

The arbor plates are usually cast iron and are known to shatter under a load.

If you buy one, hit your local metal yard and buy yourself 2 pieces of 1"x3" CR 1080 and use them to fully support anything you are working on.

Safety first!!! the press is far more dangerous than it appears at first glance,to both parts and people :2cents:

Thanks guys for your input...I'll have to think about the arbor plates.

Sometimes it seems HF is good for some stuff, but not so for others. For example, I got my engine hoist from there. It works, but it slowly drops the boom, even when not under load. I've bled the cam, checked the fluid level and made sure everything was tight, looking to prevent leaks. So, it works, but I can't use it for long periods without jacking it back up.

Hand tools, Sears Craftsman work for me.
