back it up like a dump truck

Post by timmytim »

I have a 1969 and half ford f100 custom with a 240 I6. While in park my reverse lights are on. Would anyone know the cause of this? :(

It sounds like the Neutral Safety Switch which also contains the reverse light switch is out of adjustment. However if the truck still starts when in park than the NSS should be adjusted properly. Unless the NSS is bypassed. Does it start only in park and neutral or also when in reverse and drive? If it starts when in gear than the NSS is out of adjustment and/or worn out. If it's all original, you should find the switch inside the cab near the bottom of the steering column (top side). That is the only thing I can think of right now but someone with more experience will chime in with more/different advise. Good luck.

if you have a automatic transmission and you have a swithc on the outside of the column in the engine compartment. how do you shift your transmission. on the column or on the floor?

that is strange. usually the nss/backup light switch will be inside of the firewall on a auto trans shift column. the 3 speed column has the backup light switch on the other side of the firewall in the engine compartment.

i believe that this truck was a 3 spd on the column and he switched it over to a auto.

soemthing i am wondering is if he just tried to hook the auto shifter to the 3 speed shifter tangs on the 3 speed column and that is why there is no switch on the inside but one on the outside.
