Lost keys- advice please

I bought my 71 F'100 a month ago and it only came with one key. I've been meaning to go and get another couple cut but hadn't gotten around to it. So of course, the key's gone missing and now i'm kicking myself.

I called a locksmith and was quoted $250 to have someone come out and cut a new key (crazy). I also priced out a new set of keyed door locks/ignition for @ $70.

Are they any other alternatives such as locating a key code?

the lock smith sounds like a rip to me. Another option I can think of is trying going to a pick n pull junk yard or similar and seeing if you can find another truck with the keys. If you are lucky it will have a key and you can take the ingnition and door locks.

you can buy a new set of locks for 15.99 at a mustang place. i think it is at mustangunlimited. but i could be wrong. you can also buy a new switch for 10-20. at the local parts store. getting the door open isnt very hard. but both places yo umentioned are full of it. i was also told that the door locks are suppose to have a number on them and a key can be made using that number. yo umay also be able to get a matching set of locks from the local parts stroe. you would need to check that out to verify.

I re-keyed my own door-locks to match, its pretty easy. But to take the ignition switch apart to re-key it you need the right key and that would kind of defeat the purpose. I would look at a junk yard.

Remove your switch from the dash, and find a better locksmith.

Stick a junkyard unit in it for now, if you can't find a complete set to swap in.

Down here, for this type of switch, I get $50 on site and $35 if it's brought to me, so you really just need to call around and find a better locksmith.

Pull the door lock and take it to a locksmith to have a key made or order part # C7TZ-8122050-A, from Dennis Carpenter and get a new ignition lock cylinder, door lock cylinders and 2 new keys for $60 (you'll have to buy a new ign. switch).

Thanks for all the info guys. I'm gonna try to get the door open tomorrow night and if i'm successful, I'll pull the door lock and go from there.

The problem is: to get the ignition switch OUT, you have to have the key.

You do have to either have the key, or pick the ignition to get the lock cylinder out, bot to remove the switch, you just pop the bezel and unplug it.

That's why it's easier to just use the door lock.

Instead of a mobile service call, you could just hot wire the coil (use a resistor),
and jump the solenoid and drive to the locksmith.

UPDATE- I got the doors opened last night and pulled the passenger side door lock cylinder. It's got a code on it so hopefully someone will be able to cut me a key off of it.

Getting in went better than I expected. It's kind of funny. We've had a grapefuit knife sitting unused in a drawer for years and for some reason, we never got rid of it. I don't even remember how we got it in the first place. Well that thing was perfect for popping the vent window latch.

edit that post to say how you got in would you? just because it might deter others from knowing how to break in. sure it is pretty common knowledge but it might stop others who dont know.
