charging problem

Post by SSerious »

My '67 seems to have a charging problem.
Trucks starts, runs and drives fine as long as there are no accessories being used.

If accessories are on (headlights mainly) the truck will die even after its been running/driving.
It has a new alternator and new battery.
Thoughts/ideas?

Take a look at the Charging System Troubleshooting tutorial, and see if that gets you headed in the right direction.

Makes me think of the days when no one knew about polarizing regulators. Then one day you could get pre-polarized regulators............ Now I'm seeing the pre-polarized unit less and less.

The truck would run off the battery if the charging system was at fault.

I believe your problems are related to the wire that powers the interior of your cab. When you turn on the headlights that wire draws more current than if it did just running the ignition system. It apparently cant handle the load. Check your connections at the starter solenoid, and for damaged wiring leading to the cab. There may also be a fuseable link that runs that wire also, it would be somewhere around the solenoid.
