one thing that you might try is to make sure the heater valve is good and it is going shut. and that it is installed the correct direction. all the heat valves arent the same. some of them turn the opissite way and it will still be open if put on a truck.

:yt: and quite a few of these trucks have had the shutoff removed completely (as is mine at the moment, but I've got one on the parts truck to put on after I get a new radiator in).

Yeah, if your valve isn't closing you'll be getting hot. Fresh air is drawn into the cab via the cowel vents and runs thru the heater box whenever the truck is moving.

I just went to the hardware store and bought a 1/2" gate valve and some pipe, little bit of soldering joined them, then placed it inline with the heater hose. Close it in the summer and open in the winter, someday I'll get the correct cable operated valve.....

On my truck I have to make sure the vent on the passenger side is off and the heat selector is set to cool otherwise it blows hot air going down the road with the heater off.

I used to drive a Mack dump truck that was set up like that! Kind of a PIA in the spring and fall, though, when you want heat in the morning and cool air in the afternoon!

Just your everyday old 1/2" copper plumbing pipe, and a 1/2" gate valve from the hardware store.

You can see it on the left of this pic. on the inner fender.

nice...might i ask why you used a gate valve instead of 1/4 turn ballvalve..does the same job with having your forearm sore from turning it 100 times....
being a plumber i never even thought of that as a solution...nice mcgiver fix there 8)

I had to do this to mine last week, I installed a Clardy a/c unit but the heater was overpowering it, i thought it was a hole in the firewall at first so I put Great Stuff in every hole i could find still HOT! :x All I had to do was readjust the cable on the valve because it wasn't closing all the way.

I've had one of these on my truck for about 4 years:

http://www.napaonline.com/Search/Detail ... 0069215415

I just took out the old cable-controlled valve and put this right back in place of it. It works well, it's out of the way (up against the inner fender) and if I decide to put the correct valve back on the truck, I can just swap it out.

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???
