fuel tank sending unit stock incab tank 68
about to order a new stock type fuel tank sending unit for my 68 in-cab tank, any one vendor have a better product than the other? They seem same price ($50) at LMC and Dennis Carpenter, anyone had any bad news about either, I'm figuring same vendor since same price? Banjo

I'm pretty sure all of the repros are made by Stewart-Warner and sold by all of the parts vendors.

i never had to change a sending unit except when the float got crushed. and you know what, the float was fine and the repro unit didn't fix it, I found the connector had came loose up behind the stock fuel gauge. It was worth doing anyway, because the old fuel tank sending unit would read full until you had about 3 gallons left and then would sweep rapidly toward empty and you'd get stuck if you didn't know that trick. The gauge sweep is so nice and even now I enjoy looking at it compared to what I had. Funny part is, all this started from trying to fix turn signal problems and now that I'd done everything known to man to fix THAT initial problem, I'm giving up. I'm not chasing my tail with the stock turn signal switch anymore. I may look into some of those universal hang-on-the-column turn signal switch that band clamps around the steering column and disc-off the stock turn signal arm, or I bet they unscrew. I think they do. Thanks to everyone who takes time to try to help, appreciate it, Banjo.

Hey Banjo, on the turn signal switch issue I would look into putting a factory switch in there, becauce my truck had one of those universal tss on it and I never could figure out why I never had any brake lights,well that was the problem because your brake lights run through your tss.I found out the hard way by tracing wires all day. You can still get them from Ford I just ordered one and got it in on Thursday. Put it in and everything works life its supposed to, it will definately save you some time and headaches just my !!!
I have the part numbers if you need them, they cant look them up most of their stuff only goes back to 80', the guy laughed at me when i said i needed a tss for a 69 F350.

This will interest you about brake lights and turn signals. The Brake light wiring goes through the TSS because the TSS disconnects the side that is flashing from the brake light so the Flash will appear. When not flashing the brake light goes through the TSS and to both tail lights down separate wires. So if the flasher is bad and you have the TSS in one side or the other you won't have brake light on that side as long as the TSS arm is in a position. This does not apply to later year cars that have separate turn and brake lights.

dragon good explanation of the tss and power for the brake and turn signals. so those of us who have considered puttign in athird brake light will want to know that the third brake light must be junctioned to the brake light power wire before it goes into the tss.

When my turn signals don't work (right now), the brake lights work. So, I was figuring I'd just tap into the lines behind each turn signal out back and up front and run new wires to the universal switch and leave everything intact (running through the TSS), because right now I have everything working except turn signals. Funny, the turn signals worked GREAT till I hooked back up the connector to the fuel gauge and that stopped them from working. I have a brand new about $80 TSS in the column, have chased fuses, breaks in wire, grounds, etc. I'm just sick of this turn signal crap.

You have 2 connectors or 1 under the dash for your TSS? Don't blame the stock stuff. It works great for years and years. The fact that the brake lights work tells me 90 % of your wiring is working along with the contacts in the TSS. Does your flasher work? The flasher will stop your turn signals from working. The flasher fuse, flasher connector.

yeah besides the one you can see real easy by looking under the dash there is one that attaches to the back of the cluster. perhaps you knocked/pulled the wires loose while reataching the wire to the guage.
