3rd Brake Light Idea

Post by SoCalExile »

Driving down the road and had an idea for a 3rd brake light: use the license plate lights. As in rig them to shine white like normal but switch to red when braking.

Not sure I want to do it, but curious how it could be done.

Gotcha, but how to wire it? You could probably run wires from the brake lights to the circuit for the red LEDs, but how to make the white ones shut off when the red ones come on?

Edit: although if you get bright enough LEDs, you may not need the white ones to go off? :hmm:

One possible solution:

:nono: If you tap into your brake lights circuit than the 3rd brake light would flash with you turn signal and flashers. You would need to run a wire from the brake light switch all the way to the back.

Well if you didn't mind having your third brake light to also be a turn signal it would work.

I had a friend with a bunch of these little lights give me a couple and since I didn't have the rear reflectors I put these in its place.
When the turn signal comes on they flash and when I step on the brake light they light up. I just spliced them in with a scotch lock to the brake/turn signal wire.

I have thought of getting a third brake light/ cargo light from a 90's F-150 or Ranger and fabing it up to where it would do the same as these little lights. I would also incorporate the white light to be turned on from the inside and also turn on when in reverse.

Sure you can ad all kind of lights but if they flash and are on either side near the stock lights than I don't think they count as 3rd brake lights. A 3rd brake light is in the middle and at a higher level than the regular lights(it's regulation I think). Top edge of tailgate or back of cab.

Ive been thinking about a 3rd brake light to, i think the best place for it would be in the cargo light. havent put much thought on how to do it because im still getting ready for paint but i think it would be the best place for it.

You could use a cargo light hooked up to the brake with red bulbs, it would look factory.

if you look at soem of the newer trucks. the cargo light had a brake light in them too. they should fit our trucks pretty easily. but they would have to be wired in to work right.

Someone a few months ago on here posted thier truck with a picture of his cargo light done into a 3rd brake light, can't recall who it was though at the moment. It is a blue truck, just had done some paint to it I believe was the reason for the picks. Neat idea.

My plan is to use the stock cargo lamp, but to put i three led sockets with red Leds and wire them to the barake switch.
