turn signals dead....yes, I searched

Post by dablack00 »

Ok, when I hit the switch, the turn signals don't work. Neither do my back up lights.

All my fuses have power at both sides.

My turn signal flasher shows continuity.

My emergency flashers work.

I'm good at tracing power and finding out where the failure is, but looking at the wiring diagram, I'm having a hard time figuring out where to start.

This is a 1971. My inspection just went out and I think the truck hates being inspected because the day before the inspection went out, so did the turn signals.

thanks

the back up lights are controlled by the nss. but power for them may run through the turn signal switch. i would check to see if you have power going and coming from the column fo ryour turn signals. if it does then my guess is your wiring under the rear of the truck may have a problem.

Ok, I have an update. I was wrong.

I have power on both sides of the fuses EXCEPT the little one in the middle. I checked the fuse and it has continuity so I put it back. Is that the line that powers the turn signals?

it says instrument panel on it. but the wires are blue with a red stripe coming off of the one i have sitting here. which means that is for dash lights. http://www.fordification.com/tech/wirin ... epanel.jpg

Ok, so for the fuse we are worried about, I have power at both sides. I will crack the wiring diagrams again and try to find where I'm going wrong.

thanks

Austin,
Check this modified diagram out and see if it helps... "Yes" they are are both getting there power from the same place (wire 140 Black-red striped wire) out of the fuse box, it is a possibility that the wire is broke loose from the fuse box. Take your test light and start checking the wire there and then proceed to the next one 950 if it has power there, etc... Also, try removing and cleaning the contacts on the fuse holder, I had the same thing happen even used my test light to check power on both sides of the fuse (my bad for not checking the fuse holder with the test light as it wasn't making connection with the fuse on the power out side  I figured it out after pulling my fuse box and probing the back side... )

This is exactly what I did last night.

I found in another thread of yours that #44 (blue) was the power wire for the turn signals so I traced that back to the fuse.

Here is what I mapped out before I went to the garage.

Check both sides of the fuse.
Check power in the black/red strip 140 wire that is attached to the four way connector.
Check power in the black 950 wire that is attached to the same spot as the 140 wire in the four way connector. This goes to the wiper switch.
Check power in the orange / yellow stripe 8 wire that comes out of the windshield wiper switch.
Check the power in the 8 wire at the flasher signal flasher.
Check the power in the blue 44 wire coming out of the flasher.

BOOM! That was it. When I got to the flasher, no power was coming out of it. I pulled the flasher again and used my multimeter to check for continuity in the flasher. It showed good so I was a little confused. Then I remembered I had a spare wiring harness out of a truck I parted out. I pulled it out and it had the original green covered flasher in it. I put that old green flasher in my truck and sure enough the blinkers worked but flashed really fast. So I went up to the store and got a new flasher ($2.50). Now my blinkers work good as new.

Lesson here is that a flasher can show continuity and still be bad!

thanks

Good deal
I'm guessing your backup lights are a separate problem then as the flasher wont effect them...
