Coil damaged by welding on the car?
Found out that my new Accel Super Stock coil won´t work. I wanted to fire the engine up the first time again today after I did some welding on the floor and so on. Didn´t start with the new coil but with the old coil.
Could the coil have been damaged by welding on the floor?

I've never heard of a coil being damaged but it is always recommended to disconnect the battery whenever welding on any vehicle.

Re: Coil damaged by welding on the car?
Considering that the coil was physically switched off if the truck was turned off, I think it's highly unlikely that welding on the floorboards would do damage.

They say it COULD happen, but I never unhook anything when welding on my vehicles & I've never had any problems.
Im gonna chalk it up to coincidence

Re: Coil damaged by welding on the car?
Actually if anyone knew electricity like I did it would be arced inside with the switch off or on. The welder needed a better ground so current took whatever path to get to a ground and the distance between the primary coil and the case was not enough to protect it from an arc spike. When you strike an arc with an AC or DC welder a spike about 20 nanoseconds wide will reach about 7000 volts in that time before dropping and it races to be grounded in every conductive path in the vehicle. Welding in the cab and most likely it arced over the switch contacts as one path to ground. Since the case clearance in a coil is so close the 7000 had no problem getting a ground.mr_josh wrote:Considering that the coil was physically switched off if the truck was turned off, I think it's highly unlikely that welding on the floorboards would do damage.

Or it could be a bad coil from the factory. This isn't the first time a s/s coil has been bad right out of the box.

I argued till I was blue in the face with Accel over an 8140 SS coil. They said no way running it with out a ballast resistor when used with a 2020 points eliminator would it burn out. I have it under my hood in the box where my new one came in a couple of months ago.

Even though I am not happy with Accel support I am going to use some of their parts in the future. The 300+, http://www.accel-ignition.com/ProductDe ... election=1
the Jacobs coil http://www.accel-ignition.com/ProductDe ... election=8
and dizzy http://www.accel-ignition.com/ProductDe ... election=6 MAYBE
Maybe this dizzy though, http://www.msdignition.com/Products/Dis ... butor.aspx
