69 ignition switch/turn signa into an 87 bronco/F150 harness

Post by Spectre »

Ok all.. Here's what I want to do / am doing

I put the cab of a 69 F250 onto my 87 bronco frame. I have removed all the 69's wiring and put the harness from the 87 bronco into the 69 F250.. I'm using all the bronco's electrical (headlight/wiper switches) and what not.. However I wanted to retain the 69 steering column and use the ignition switch that's in the dash and not the one on the column.

I have looked at the wiring diagram for the 69 located here http://www.fordification.com/tech/wirin ... rging2.jpg

However it's not making much sense to me.. Though now that I think about it, i should get the 87's wiring diagram and just make the wires match where they go..

Also I need to wire up the turn signals to... yay.. =) Hmm guess I need to remember how to follow wiring diagrams. =)

Or if someone has done this before and could pass on information on it I'd appreciate it..

Spectre,

IMO it would be much easier to mount the 87's steering column in the bump, and use the 87's wiring.
How bout' some pictures? Your's might be the first TTB 4 X 4 bump on here?

I already have the 69's column fabbed and mounted in.. I wanted to use the NSS and gear selector dial from the 69..

However I'm wondering if that was a mistake and I should take it all back out and have my 87's moddified to go in.. Grrr.. That just irriates me.. Hindsight is 20/20

But I'd really like to use the in dash ignition switch.. Dunno why just I think it's more nostalgic...

as for the first TTB bump.. I've already done a SAS on the bronco frame a year or so ago..

I have a writeup here but have been neglecting to update it.. I'll try and do some of that today..

you need the 87 diagrams to know what wires do what in that harness.

Ok I found the diagram below.. the 69 is early of course. the 87 is "mid"

This is all simple and all.. I'm just wondering if the 69's ignition switch can handle it..

87 - 2 power wires coming in
69 - 1 power wiring coming in

87 - 1 run output for accessories AND 1 run & ACC out for accessories
69 - 1 run & acc out for accesories

I'm just wondering if the 69's ignition switch can handle the power load being pulled through everything. The yellow power wire that goes into the switch is 1/2 the size of the 87's and the 87 has 2 of them..

What do ya all think?

I spent the last of the daylight playing with the steering column.. I had just decided to swap over to the 87's column so I didn't have to wire anything special.. However while checking out how I was going to make a bracket to bolt the 87's column to the 69's dash setup I realized that the ignition actuator that goes on the steering column is completely in the way to bolt it up. The 69 has a column tunnel that doesn't allow for the actuator.. I'm wondering if I cut it up that I'll have to take so much out that I'll ruin the stability of the structure...

I did take time today and looked at a bunch of wiring diagrams so I think I can just wire up everything for the 69 setup.. However I'm concerned about power.. The 87's harness has 2 nice size power wires coming in and the 69's ignition only has a 1 smaller wire.. I'd be afraid of burning stuff out with the small 69 ignition setup..

So Just to be safe I may have to do a main power switch and a push button ignition. I guess since it's a wheeler I don't really have to worry about an ACC setting.. Just power on and off.. Only thing I'll have in it will be a CB radio and a Ham Radio. Those will be ran directly to the battery.. I "might" put a stereo in it but not sure...

decisions decisions...

the first pic you posted is of a 67 ignition switch but it is similar to the 69 switch. i wouldnt cut up the brake pedal housing. it would take me considerable time to do the pins out and show how to do it. but i dont have time to do it.

I don't want to cut anything.. Nothing set in stone right now.. Still checking into all my options.. Well I'll have to cut some stuff up.. I have to be able to fit my transfer case shifter in the floor board.. Unfortunately the 69's weren't designed to hold an 87 transfer case. lol

Just some weird thinking.. I could eliminate the ACC portion and all the loads that would take from the equation and the 69's ignition switch should work..

hmmm...

After more thinking I believe I'm going to wire up the 69's ignition into the 87's wiring and leave the 87's actuator there for a "just in case" "roadside emergency"
