My question is how do I remove the lock ring on the rotor of the starter, so I can replace the drive unit? It only goes 1/2 way around the shaft and it doesn't have any noticeable way for removal. I'm sure people have been taking this part off for 50 years or so, I hope someone will post their technique.
Thanks!

Re: Starter Rebuild Question
I put a screwdriver on each end of the lock ring and push both at the same time. Use one screwdriver to keep one end of the ring from moving in the slot and use the other screwdriver to slide it off of the shaft. It's been a long time since I've done it but it's a spring and could fly a long way so it might be a good idea to do it in a box so you don't lose it. If you do it slowly, you may be O.K.

putting a piece of rubber under the horse clip will help it from bouncing away when it pops off. the last one i did. i was on the rubber mat that is on my tailgate. it didnt go very far once it popped down onto the rubber.
