Instrument cluster wiring.

Post by Spectre »

2 part question

So I'm looking at this diagram http://fordification.com/tech/wiring/68-09.jpg

I want to do a custom autometer dash and what not but it won't be for awhile.. So I'm deciding if I want to make the 69's cluster work with my 87's harness for a much cleaner look..

So on the back of the cluster is a box. From other diagrams It shows it being a "constant power source" 3 connections on it.

1 goes to ground,
1 goes to power when the key is in the ACC and RUN position.
1 goes to all the gauges (except the oil preassure gauge) That shares with the main power wire..

So what does that I'm trying to figure out if I should just run a constant power there from the harness and keep it like it is or tie each gauge to the power wire in the 87's harness..

Also per this diagram http://fordification.com/tech/wiring/68-23.jpg

There is no ground wires on the indicator lamps.. Does it just use the cluster itself for ground like the tailights do? So basically I would run a ground wire and attach it to the cluster? Or does the "constant power source" ground lead serve as the ground for the signals as well?

Hope that makes sense.. Thanks!

the little box is a voltage regulator. it regulates power to each gauge. you have to use the regulator to run the gauges properly.

k.. So my constant power should go to the regulator.

I'm still pondering it.. nothing is set in stone yet.

yes power comes from the fuse box and ignition switch to the regulator then to the gauges.
