fuel tanks
Ok, im not shure if this should go here or not, but those of you who moved the fuel tank from the cab to the bed, how did you do it, and what did you do with the extra space?

Re: fuel tanks
I've got duel tanks, the cab one and one under the bed between the rails on the drivers side, I guess it was a standard thing in camper specials. I plan on just using the extra tank and do away with the cab one. I want to drop the extra tank and do a good cleaning and internal seal/cote thing. Like a freind of mine did to his bike tank.
I need to look at the sending unit though, does anyone know who might carry the sending units for the extra under bed tanks? Also, does someone make a metal patch to seal the incab tank filler hole?
Not trying to steal your thread, might get some good info though.

I haven't done it yet but bobby ford and td have nice write ups on putting a Mustang tank under the bed.Neither ever said what they did with the extra space. The Mustang tanks are very reasonable new.I bought a kit that includes tank, sending unit and all hardware for about $135.00.

Re: fuel tanks
Sure wish I cuda put in one of those Mustang tanks in my rig. I opted for the easy tank/tool box installation in the bed. It cuts down on bed space but not as bad as I thought it'd be. Holds 60 gallons and the tool box on top is useful. I kept the in-cab tank so between the two I've got nearly 80 gallons on board. I haven't figured out what kind of mileage I'm getting, but even if it was 9 mpg I could go over 700 miles before having to fill-up. Of course the fill-up hurts! ![Doh ](./images/smilies/icon_doh.gif)

Re: fuel tanks
Good lord! BB, that beast would cost you $256 where I live! Though, you wouldn;'t have to fill-up for a while, so I guess it kinda even out. but DAMN! That is a bog chunk of change. Save up those bottles and cans guys.
Still, I like that toolbox/tank bit. definitly going on the possible future to-do list. I"ve got a stock tank, but it's not installed. It's all there, too. I just havn't installed it. Still waiting to get a couple other things first. Well, I assume it's stock to ym truck. P.O. couldn't remember, and so it came with the truck. Mine has the filler cap,, but it's just got a gas cap over it.
Back to topic, Havn't swapped mine over. Don't know what I'm going to do with it, yet. I have some stuff I wanna do to the interior, but that would proboly be in the way, so we'll see.

Ya, I like the idea that I don't have to fill-up so often.
But when I do it hurts!!

Re: fuel tanks
My truck used to have the side saddle tanks. I removed the tanks but kept the in-cab three position fuel switch.
I bought the fuel tank/tool box from Northern Tool. This is the link to their site: http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/ ... _200306721
I bought mine in 2005. The picture on the website looks like they've remodeled the tank just a little bit near the fuel cap.
The dimensions for the tank are on the website but it's roughly 57" long, 20" deep and 20" tall. I needed it to fit between the frame rails because I still need to be able to put on my canopy during the winter.
The bed of my truck used to be approx 8' 2" long. With the new tank I still have over 6' of useable space. The useable bed space in now just over 6' 4".
The tank manufacturer welded three "L" type brackets on the tank. The tank is bolted directly to the bed with three bolts. One on each end, one in the middle. I reinforced the ones on the ends with steel plates that had been welded into the bed before the truck was rhino lined.
The fuel hose comes out from the middle of the back of the tank. I ran it out to the drivers side and then straight down through the bed floor. The hose hooks into the three position fuel valve, along with the fuel line from the in-cab tank. I just plugged the spot for the third tank.
This is the view of the in-cab three position fuel selector valve, from underneath the truck. The front of the truck is to your left, the bed is to the right. From top to bottom the first hose is coming in from the new tank in the bed. The second hose is coming through the floor from the in-cab tank, and the third line is heading to the engine.
There is one more hose that comes off the tank near the fuel cap. This is a vent hose which I ran down an access hole in the bed to a charcoal filter near the front of the truck.
If you can follow it, it runs up under the bed rail and then snakes down through an access hole at the left rear corner of the bed. The wiring you see is for the sending unit.
Continued.....

Re: fuel tanks
The new tank came with a site gauge that was INSIDE the tool box. I removed the site gauge and replaced it with the round sending unit you see in the top left corner of the box. I actually need to get a different sending unit because I'm getting false readings. It works and gives me an "idea" of how much fuel I have left, but when it reads empty I still must have another 20 gallons.
Anyway, the sending unit is wired to an auxillary fuel gauge that I put on the left side of the steering column.
The three position fuel selector to the left of the gauge is disconnected and doesn't do anything. I left it there in case I want to use the toggle switch for something else down the road. The fuel transfer is all controlled by the three position valve switch on the cab floor.
All things considered it was an easy install. I lost some bed space but nothing too bad, and I gained some lockable dry storage and a whole lotta gas. The tank and tool box quality are very good! I can send more pic's if there's something specific someone wants to see.

Re: fuel tanks
Here's another view of where I laid out my gauges. The auxillary fuel gauge is on the far left.
