steering wheel color

Post by chiggerranch69 »

I am restoring my steering wheel on my 69 and was wondering: what amount of glossieness did the original black wheels have? Mine was so faded and dirty I couldn't tell. Thanks.

the steering wheel was a satin finish, the same as the colum. DC dosent make the steering wheels and horn buttons with the same finish as they come from the factory. The horn buttons didnt come chrome as DC reproduces them, the originals come with a satin silver finish on them.

I thought the 70 and earlier wheels had a gloss finish, but I could be wrong.

The one in my truck is glossy and it's original.

i am going to differ on the opinion about the chrome horm rings and buttons being painted from the factory. if they were painted from the factory. there would still be paint on soem of them over the years. and none i have evwer seen have had any spec of silver paint over the chrome.

Not painted, just a satin finish.

They could have accomplished this by using a mold/die with a very smooth finish in the cavity.

Thank you for posting, These pictures show what im wanting to see. I wanted to look at your horn ring to see if it was chrome. It looks the same as mine the painted argent color, I guess they put what ever the had at the time or put different ones on at different plants. Ive got a argent one thats in really good condition that i pulled of a 69 ranger to use on my truck. I dont ever see the chrome ones in the scrap yards around here, but fordman says all the ones he sees are chrome so im thinking that there wasnt a set type of horn ring used on these trucks.

Thanks for posting and providing pics! I went with gloss black. I sanded it down, ground down and filled the cracks with kneaded metal putty and put 3 coats of rattle primer and 4 coats of VHT engine enamel. It was layin around and I thought it might stand up to the sun better. A little wet sanding with 1600 and a polish and it is looking flawless! I just have a few hard corners left, so I will try to post pics soon. So far I have about 4 beers and 8 bucks in it :D
