I have no brake lights!

Post by ericknight »

1970 F100, have tail lights & rear blinkers but no brake lights. I disconnected plug at brake pedal switch and tested it with a test light, it has power going to it. Bypassed the switch with a jumper wire and they still didn't come on. Tested all fuses and they are good. Hazard works on the front but not the back, and they stop when you press the pedal. Any ideas? Is there a brake light relay somewhere?

i just looked at the 70 master diagram. the power comes out of the fuse box to the hazard flasher then down to the brake light switch. from there it goes into the turn signal switch. from the turn signal switch that wire 810A goes to the hazard flasher switch. my bet is the turn signal switch is going or gone bad. wiggle it. and see if the lights come on.

I unplugged the turn signal switch from the harness and tested wires with my test light. One is hot all the time, I guess it's for the horn. One is hot when I depress the brake pedal, so it is getting power to at least the turn signal switch. Three of the wires flash when I turn on the hazzard switch. How hard is it to replace the turn signal switch, and where can I get a new one?

the one that is hot all the time isnt the horn. if you press the brake pedal and the one wire gets hot then the switch may be good. and i tcould be in something else. i can't think properly right now. i need to eat something. i'll look at it later.

ok i checked again. i am thinking since the switch has power going out of it then it has to be a bad wire beteeen the tss and the rear brake light wires.

Replaced turn signal switch and everything works now. Still available from Ford dealer, $66.32. I already knew the part number, DOTZ-13341-B, and that's what they looked up on their computer. I wanted to verify that it was the correct part number, so I told them to look it up for a 1970 F100, but their computer only goes back to 1980. So I would have been out of luck had I not already knew the part number.Image

Looks like a date to me. I ordered it at a dealership in Rome, GA and they got it from Memphis, TN. Here's one on ebay with a different date http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NOS-FORD ... ccessories

One like this: http://www.automotive-diagnostic-tools. ... -56500.htm
There are several types for the different types of terminals. I have a few types if you need to borrow one.

i use the pick to depress the little tabs that hold them in while i put pulling pressure from behind. i pull the wire slightly as i pick at the tabs. and they slide right out when the two tabs are closed enough to slide back through.
