Carpet kit 1971 crew cab 4x4

I was wondering if anybody might be able to help me out? I am finishing restoring my 71 crew cab 4x4. I was going to bring it to a local upholstery shop and have them make an interior carpet kit for me. I want the carpet to go from up under the dash all the way to the gas tank in the back of the cab (full carpet). They can carpet the interior for me, but it will not be molded ($350). I found a catalog place that sells a repro carpet kit for 73-79 crew cabs that are molded with the jute backing ($225). These come with the sewn in foot rests for the driver and passenger. I was wondering if anybody knows the difference between the 71 and 73 crew cabs and if the 73 carpet kit would fit the 71. I think they are similiar and with a little trimming it might fit in the 71. I would like to buy the repro carpet kit and do it myself. I think it might fit better if it is molded with the backing attached. Any suggestions or help???? Does anybody know where I can get a repro carpet kit for my 71? Thanks...

regular cabs would probably be the same. for carpet. so i have to assume the crewcab is going to be the same. the only snag that you may turn up. is the high vs low hump in the floor. if that is even an issue in the crewcabs. 71 vs 73. there may be other things to consider i am not sure. i have never seen a 73-79 crew. and only a 67-72 crew a couple of times. the only thing that comes to mind is the foot pad and gas pedal backign padc. if the 73 has that or not. after 75 i think it was. the 76-79 automatic trucks didnt use hump covers. the floor was just made a standard high hump floor. so the hump woul dbe molded slightly different for the 76-79 trucks with automatic transmission. all previous trucks would have had the hump cover. and the carpet should fit over the hump cover just fine.

I have not had to put carpet in mine as the black one was done already. I would think that the floor pans would be similar enough, if not identical, to use the later carpet kit. If it were me, I would order the later kit and try it and then report the results here. I don't know if I can reach the previous owner of mine to ask where he got the carpet in the black truck. When I can, I will take a closer look at mine and see if it is a molded set. Not a good answer, but I would try it before spending 350 dollars for something you know won't be a molded fit. Good luck and will be looking for the results.

When I spoke to a carpet supplier at a car show - he told me i could order carpet in various ways.

1) to the in-cab tank -
2) passed the tank - as if i did not have the tank in the cab.
3) for them to cut it 1' longer in the front so that it would go up the foot wells and firewall.

He told me - always call in and say what you been and they would try to accommodate the cut - I might be able to fish out the company name if you require it.

also - a Q: - are the carpets taped at the edges or 'raw' - I forgot to ask him that one !

Furthest back I could find in crew cab molded carpet kits is 73... You may contact them, and if you have any of your old carpet left, they might be able to make something for you that would work...

I have a 77 crew and a 70 crew. I do not think that the carpets would interchange. You could probably make it work, just would not fit too well. I own and operate an auto upholstery shop, and personally, I would never buy a molded carpet. Very loose fitting. When a shop makes a carpet, they cut and sew anywhere there is an irregularity in the floor pan. They should glue jute to the pan, and then the carpet to the jute. If done correctly, the fit and finish is far superior to a molded kit. Just my 2 cents.

$350 is definately a fair price for the job. But you should see some of the shops prior work. I've seen some sloppy jobs done this way as well.
