Been Asked B4! Soundproofing/Heat insulation

Post by ford4x4fun »

Thought it was time for some updated information on this one!

Sound proofing/Insulation, what have you used and what has worked good. I want to soundproof my cab, before I put the carpet down. What have you all used, what has worked, and what products would you recommend. I am going to POR-15 my cab before I put this stuff down, so I don't think I will be using a liquid sound proofing!

I am just now finishing the interior of my 72 F250. Here is what I did:
1. I ordered the sound dampner from Ebay, Zilla Mat brand. I did a lot of research of the various brands (Dynamat, Hushmat, Second Skin, etc.) and found this to be the best deal with comparable quality. I chose not to do the Lowe's stuff as I wasn't crazy about the asphalt product after researching it. I put it on the outer panel of the inside of the doors, the top of the roof cab ceiling, and the entire floor and on the inside of the rear cab wall (behind the in-cab gas tank). I now think that was a little overkill as you don't really have to cover the entire area but oh well, no harm. It went down pretty easy with the roller that they provided but I recommend you let the roll "warm up" in the house for a day or so to make it easier to work with.
2. I then put a layer of the foil backed 3/8" jute backed insulation down over the Zilla Mat. With this, I cut out a panel and put it on the inside of the door trim panel and put the weather barrier on the outside of it. I also put a layer on the cab roof ceiling. I also put a layer over the entire floor and over the rear cab wall behind the in-tank gas tank. I chose to put the foil side "down" or against the floor, roof, walls and keep the jute back insulation to the outside. I figured the foil against the walls will help keep the heat out and keep the insulation exposed to breath. I also ordered this from Ebay, 2 rolls at 24 sq ft per roll for about $1 per foot. I used a HD spray adhesive to adhere this all to the surfaces.
3. I then ordered a 1/8" Mass Loaded Vinyl from "soundproofing.org). I ordered 32 sq ft which was too much. I put it only over the entire floor with spray adhesive. This stuff is a little hard to work with and you definitely need to let it warm up in the house before working with it. You will also need to cut it into smaller sections to work with it. I think this final step of the soundproofing is worth it.
Now, if I did it again, I would have skipped the foil jute backed insulation step and ordered the mass loaded vinyl with the CLOSED CELL insulation attached to it. check it out at http://shop3.mailordercentral.com/super ... 05CC%2D54F. This would have saved a step and the closed cell insulation might be better than the jute backed insulation.
4. I am today, finishing installing the molded carpet that I ordered through Ebay from ACC (Auto custom carpet) for $145 including shipping. I am very impressed with it and when I ordered it, I asked that it NOT be trimmed. It has a lot of extra on the sides and front/back. I was able to put it all the way up the firepwall and plenty to up under the gas tank. I'll post pics in my project update when done. Here is my project thread and you can see the steps that I took above with pics. http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... 22&t=55418. Good luck!

Oh, in addition to my comment/post above, I also applied some rubberized undercoating underneath the cab floor area, wheel well, and tranny tunnel of the exterior of the truck. I would recommend the Duplicolor rubberized undercoating with sound eliminator vs. the standard undercoating. I tried the standard stuff (Duplicolor and Napa) and the Duplicolor with sound eliminator is a lot thicker. Just doing this step made a noticeable difference.

If you are interested in the foil backed jute backing, here is the product I ordered from Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HEATSHIE ... 415247a174

You really have to research closely the product quality and shipping price as the variance from vendors is CRAZY and you can go from $1 per sq ft. to $5....CRAZY! :?

Pretty much all of the pics I took are in my project thread: http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... 22&t=55418 Because of the layers I did, it was rather time consuming and I worked on it as time allowed but it's 90% done. Like I said, I would recommend saving a step and some time by just getting the mass loaded vinyl with the closed cell insulation attached instead of doing the foil backed jute backing. Plus by doing it that way, you probably shave off about 1/4'' from the total layer which isn't a big deal but I did notice that the additional thickness did cause a little work for me when reinstalling all of the various bolts for the seats, seat belts, scuff plates, etc. I just need to do the weatherstripping and then reinstall the scuff plates. I also need to do a little detail of adding the additional Ranger dash parts that I have gotten along the way and then buy a new seat cover/upholstery.

If you have specific questions about my install, feel free to ask and I'll tell ya what I did or know!

I used FATMAT for my project. I covered the entire floor from back of cab to firewall. I got the 50sq ft package direct from fatmat for like $79. It did a really good job of quieting down the cab.
