Vintage diesel for 1959 Ford truck?
Vintage diesel for 1959 Ford truck?
I have a 59 ford truck id like to put a diesel in. People tell me the 5.9 cummins would be cool in there, and i know it would, but i would like to do something more period correct. Does anyone know of an engine around 5 to 7 liters from that era,mid 50s to mid 70s? Caterpillar, cummins, perkins, international, even tractor engines, does anyone know of anything?

The 5.9 cummins has been around a long time. Before Dodge got a hold of it they caled it a "b" series diesel, I think they were around in the 60's but not sure. A 4 cyl. would work well in the f-100. The chevy step vans used them known as the 4BT engine. Not a power house but good economy. Perkins diesels would be a viable choice also, availiable in lots of combines. Would require some work to the governor because you want speed limiting type instead of load type.

I believe there's a place for vendors ads here somewhere?
Good luck with your diesel conversion.

I heard a rumor that the diesel engine from a Ford 6000 tractor will bolt up where the inline six gas engine came out of.

Re: Vintage diesel for 1959 Ford truck?
When I was 7, in 1957, my Dad and his brother ordered and bought 2 brand new F100 Ford pickups. Both 223-6cyl, automatics, and stepside boxes, and Custom Cabs. They should have ordered the 292-auto, the 223 six was almost a disaster in these trucks that were actually named "Ford-O-Matics." Anyway I remember Dad looking over the order paper and said that there was a diesel option available for the '57. It was an English diesel, most likely built for the farm tractor division Ford had in England. I am also real certain that it was a Perkins. If you could bolt a 354 Perkins turbo diesel in your truck it could be a tire shredder. They were a real popular combine engine used on this continent and installed on Massey Ferguson 750, 760, 850 and 860 model machines. I had one in a 750 and it was a real great engine and real easy on fuel and it was turbocharged. Do your research then when you get things lined up, find a "combine wrecking yard", there are some huge yards here in Canada, and that is where you will find a 354 if it is the right engine that was used in that vintage of truck. Most likely that engine would have been a 4 cylinder but you would have to find that out also in your research. Happy hunting!

Screamin Detroit = 2 stroke Jimmy
The only engine which driving one is like having your head inside the engine.

Re: Vintage diesel for 1959 Ford truck?
Probably the most correct for the era would be a Detriot Diesel 53 series. 4-53 or 6v-53 for a mid size truck or if you have a big truck there were a lot of 6-71's used . An uncle of mine had a 1959 ( F-450-500?)stake bed ranch truck with a 4-53 and straight pipe. Cattle were hearing impared by the time they were to the sale barn. Were also a lot of Perkins used, Willys even had a Perkins option for the CJ-5. Will

a couple of years ago a guy would come to our weekly cruise with a 52 Chevy pickup with a Detroit Diesel 2-stroke in it.It was really loud and put out a lot of fumes.

Detroits have some fans out there and the engines did have some high points like being able to run about the same with significant internal damage, not terribly hard to work on and they would certainly never rust with all they leak. The best 2 stroke Detroits were the big ones. They still shine in moderate load, rough atmosphere applications like marine and sawmill/shredding applications. Mostly because there's no other 500HP 1800 RPM engine you can buy for less than scrap price.
