shift indicator lamp.

Post by 1972hiboy »

Hey guys, I have a 72 auto camper special. All the dash lights work but the shift indicator is not lighted....are these sapposed to have a courtesy lamp so at night its easier to see which gear your selecting? If so how and where is the light bulb to change? Thanks for your time and input in advance!

No such light on these trucks. I dont think that started till '78 on Ford trucks.

I think some of the guys have rigged up a light. Im sure they will chime in.

My 72 CS doesn't have a lighted selector either. From what I can tell, it doesn't have any set up for lighting. :?

oh. i thought you meant a when to shift light. duh. the dentside era was the first to use the nite light for the selector. you can upgrade your column to one of them though. you use the turn signal housing and turn signal switch from a dentside with the light in it. up to 1978. 78/79 columns are wider. i am pretty sure they were used before 78.

Interesting. I have several pre-'78 dentside auto cloumns & none have the light, nor do they have any provisions for one.

Maybe it was a Ranger XLT only deal??

Dennis Carpenter list the bulbs starting with the 73 year. If I remember right you have to pull the gear selector cover and lense out of the column to get to the bulb. Also if the column has a blue/red wire If I rember right that is the wire for the gear selector light. This is just from memeory so I may be wrong.
