CONSOLE FOR BUMPS AVAILABLE

Post by Phil105 »

I've been searching for quite a while to find a mfg. of a quality floor mount console for my truck. I think I may have found them.
Check out this website. They make them for many models of cars/trucks and very likely have one that will fit my 72 with bench seat.
Going to call Monday and talk to them. Will post what I'm told.

Here's the website:

Good morning Phil,

This is really neat! I browsed through a bunch of customer photos and can imagine one of these being immensely practical and good-looking too. I guess it means that a guy would have to be resigned to never having a middle passenger but that's probably not an issue for most guys.

I also like the looks of the overhead consoles for trucks with granny floor-shift transmissions.

Maybe a dumb question, but why do you need a console?

I was not impressed with those, maybe it's my Jessie James mentality that it has to work and look good to be cool. The consoles with the radio pointing at the seat base or the guages looking at the back wall are pointless. There's very little style to the designs either, and no texture. You can see how hard it was to get a good material fit so the lack of any texture will turn it into a glare panel when the sun's right.

None of the customer comments talk about mounting it securely to the dash or floor. Note that all the factory consoles that lasted have a metal reinforcement. My '68-70 Torino consoles break apart because they don't have any support.

I could see putting a doghouse type console in our trucks that would still let you have three seating or tossing the gastank out of the cab and storing stuff back there. I guess there's a reason Ford put the bedside storage on our trucks.

Well Jamie - I guess this is why they make chocolate AND vanilla - so people can choose. I happen to like the looks of it - want a molded drink holder and think it will look really good painted dash color, can cut it out to fit around my center a/c vents, don't see a problem with the radio "pointing at the seat base - the factory radio points at the seat back - besides, the radio I use is in my glove box with an infrared remote! Gauges, if desired can be installed at an angle to point wherever you want them. Don't have a clue what you mean about "texture" - I like the smooth finish as it matches the metal dash. Not concerned about a 3rd rider - they can ride in the back if they have to go with me.

I believe a couple of the pictures showed the mount brackets for it - these type consoles are installed in streetrods all the time. Sorry it's not your cup of tea

Well, please don't take offense to my comment, it's impossible to have a rational discussion when emotions are involved and I'm not dissing your decision to put one in, just asking why you would want one.

These consoles just look like something from a '70's public works project, not much 'style' or 'insight' to the design. Look at any OEM console from the '60's to today and there are all sorts of little doo-dads that make them nicer and more usable vs. a plain chunk of slippery fiberglass with rounded edges.

I want a cup holder in my truck too, just not sure how I'm going to incorperate it. Heck, might even make one of the old hump huggers or something similiar so I can take it out to run around with both kids. The 8yo doesn't like sitting on the console in the Ranchero when we go fishing. :)

To smooth and blah. It needs some of the style that was put into the dash and such. Otherwise it looks like someone added a console as an afterthought. I like aftermarket stuff as long as it looks like it belongs with the truck. That reminds me of the Buick with an Autozone import wing bolted to the trunk. Just doesn't belong.

No offense taken Jamie. I just don't think you guys are using much imagination. The console as sold is not intended to be the "finished product" - it simply provides a base. I believe with proper dash matching paint color, maybe use of the woodgrain vinyl tape (as is used on the dash and my exterior trim) for the top surface and possibly some chrome/stainless trim, etc. this can be a very nice looking unit. It would make for an excellent place to install a GPS, back up camera and stereo speakers on the sides (bumps don't lend themselves to too many locations for extra speakers). Cut out and drop in a CD holder, clock (which none of our trucks have), drink holders, etc.

You have a totally different use for your truck than me. I use this truck only for personal satisfaction - no kids to haul - usually just me and maybe my dogs and I don't think it will bother them. Don't take it fishing or hunting or anywhere like that. I drive it on weekends and to car/truck shows. If I were using a truck as you are, I may tend to agree more with you.

If you guys have any photos of consoles that you like, I'd sure like to see them - may give me a better idea. One thing I like about this installation is it can easily be removed without any visible destruction to the original truck should, at some point, you, or a new owner, want a completely original look.

Either way, as I said above - this is why they make chocolate AND vanilla - we don't all like the same thing. Along those lines, I mention one thing my mother taught me when I was young - "if you don't have something good to say - sometimes it's best left unsaid".

Thanks for sharing. Not sure about it, but I would like to see one in a bump. One day I will find me a set of buckets and put a console in between them. For now I made a wooden one that sets on the seat and a wooden box 4 stereo, speakers/cup holder that sets in front of the bench. I always figure to each our own.

Here is mine. Nothing special but I have two drink holders and the lid opens to store a bunch of stuff. A 3rd person can ride though I don't have a center seat belt. They put a leg on each side. Usually alone anyway.
One wing bolt holds it down that I can remove by hand if needed.
I don't need speakers in a console since there is no real stereo sound that way. Tired it, didn't sound good at all. Was fine when I was young as long as it was loud. Now I like quality better the loudness. I have a 45w head unit in the dash and 2 6x9"s in the doors. Great sound

Works 4 now. Going to put player in dash and relocate speakers. Do not know where yet.
