bright red diamond tufted leather headliner

Post by Whateverman »

i got a call from my bro yesterday about a 72 f700 firetruck thats getting a resto done on it,and on top of replacing the cab with a less holy one the F.D. guys are ditching the tufted leather headliner, door panels and dashpad...all in bright red...
supposedly they're in primo condition (althought the dashpad was described as the fugly-est thing ever seen)...
i haven't seen any of em yet,but am intersted none the less -i have this strange attraction to weird 70's-styled crap (but not in gawdy colours) and so i need to know : is there a good way to dye these reugees from the age of disco black ?
- still got my first first car 20+yrs later : 69 f100 sorta kinda pretending its a Mercury M100 w/a 70 f350 sport custom cab (factory buckets) 67 grille with 69 ranger cooneyes 68 merc box and hood, some supercool fiberglass fenders i scored way back when, 76 f150 disc brake frontend..currently running a 90 5.0HO 4bbl/c4 auto & 3.50 posi...originally a 360/c6 f100 Ranger with dealer added towpack (incl. kelsey hays trailer brake),boxside toolbox, behind the seat stowage & belly tank...only original parts left on 'er are the frame, rear end, rear springs, and rear bumper...

Aw c'mon- surely someone must have attempted to dye some leather,or heard a good anecdote about someone's relative trying it ? :)

I'd have to see some pics, it might be pretty cool on a black truck with a street rod style build or goawd forbit a '70's street machine F100 with air shocks and L50's out back?

Yeah -air shocks and big fat meats for sure! i'd need some honkin big chrome traction bars too eh? lol!
I still haven't seen the stuff myself, and unless i can dye em black, they'd be useless to me - bright red door panels and headliner in a "goldenrod" (school bus yellow) cab (inside at least, the exterior is dressed in the finest shade of beater black) is just a little too sickening to attempt
