window regulator spring

has anyone took the regulator spring off the window regulator? is it hard to get off or put back on?

nevermind. they come off easily enough. but it doesnt help collapse them further closed to fit in a medium flat rate box. the spring doesnt seem to do anything. it just sits between the two posts. and both posts are rivted to the gear part. so the arm wont move off of the gear arm. i will be lucky if i can get the spring back on.
