Rear Window Rubber
I have a 1972 F-100 and I bought new rear window rubber, standard no chrome trim and my dad and I are having a hard time figuring out how the rubber goes on. Could anybody tell me step by step on how to install my rear window with the new rubber? If possible include pictures. Thanks!

Re: Rear Window Rubber
Well it's been a few years ago I did one, so bear with my faulty at best memory...
I first applied the gasket to the rear widow which I had already removed from the cab. I than applied LOTS of liquid dishwasher soap to both the rubber window gasket and the lip at the back of the cab.
My buddy and I working from each side started at the bottom and worked our way up and over the top pulling the gasket groove over the rear window lip in the cab. We used wooden strips that were about 1/16" thick by 1" wide and about 10" long as pry tools as opposed to steel screw driver blades so we wouldn't crake or breat the glass.
The rear window was a flat sheet of glass it was NOT a slider. Turned out to be much easier than I thought it would be.
Hope my verbal description helps.

Re: Rear Window Rubber
this is how i do it ,if you're extra patient and careful it'll work for windshields too :
( you're gonna need a buddy around to help hold the window in place)
after you get the rubber on the window, lay a thin rope in the groove on the outer edge of the seal with the ends sticking out enough to grab em (doesn't have to go all the way around the window just the top half and sides are usually enough)
when you get the window started into the opening ,pull the rope into the cab,it (usually) pulls the seal over the lip in the cab
-because you want the rope to grab the seal avoid lubing up the seal ,try to lube the cab lip instead
- try to use the strongest rope you can,the lip in the cab tears the crap out of it ,and breaking the rope off causes a whole lot of extra nightmares
- expect to have to poke some of the seal over the lip with a thin screwdriver (or what-have-you) afterwards

Re: Rear Window Rubber
i did one last year. it was pretty easy. this was a used rubber. i took out the slider winodw and rubber by pealing down the rubber from the top inside of the cab. i then used screwdrivers to hold the peeled part down while i selected another top part of the rubber to peel down. i then used another screwdriver to hold that down. i then went in the middle of both screwdrivers and peeled down tha part and slowly i got the rubber to push out enough i could remove one of the furthest out screwdrivers. i then moved to the other side and peeled down more rubber using screwdrivers to hold it down. i basically did the same thing putting the solid glass back in. except i used the screwdrivers as pry bars. just a little at a time strating up each side until it all met in the center and the rubber was in. this did not work for the windshield i tried to remove. i have since just been cutting the rubbers away from the windshields.

Re: Rear Window Rubber
Are the sliding and non sliding rear window seals the same?

Nice. Maybe i can finally take the rattly, leaky slider out of my truck and put the cool stickered up one piece window in from my old ford!

Re: Rear Window Rubber
The rope trick works great we install rear sliders at my work and that's how we do it.

windshields are a P.I.T.A.
the only way i've managed to get them out without destroying them is by cutting the rubber off (and even then,i've busted a couple with the knife and/or cable saw i was using..)
the last windshield install i did (on my truck's previous cab, using the rope trick ,to replace a windshield that had a smal rock chip and was delaminating and fogging up inside) took over 4 hours of fighting - but that cab had been in an accident somewhere along the line and was kinda tweaked - it appeared to have been repaired with a 20lb sledge,a cutting torch,a mess of welding, the worst hackjob grinding i've ever seen and a wheelbarrow of bondo to cover it all (which wasn't detected -of course- until a year after the cab was installed on my chassis)
- the day after that windshield was replaced it got smoked by a fist sized rock thrown out from set of duallies on a dumptruck i was waiting to pass on the hwy and suffered a nice big star fracture

Re: Rear Window Rubber
Replacing the back glass is easiest using the small diameter rope trick to peal the rubber to the inside of the cab while someone pressing in from the outside.

Re: Rear Window Rubber
Yes, these types of windows are what you call rope-ins you have to rope them in. When you get new rubber it hasn't been worn in so it is a pain, dish soap works the best. Then after your done your suppose to use a silicon sealant around the rubber to keep water from getting in. Most people skip this step, but it's how it was done factory. If you don't do it now, you will know 5 years down the road when your pinch welds are rusted through.
