Underdash A/C unit

Post by Heavenlyfire »

Ok all, I got my A/C unit in the mail today, ( thanks Flyflinger). I need some guidance now. I am assuming that this thing takes the place of my heater core and the blower. :hmm: Do I pull all of it out or do I have to leave some of it in there? Here goes another project  .

Fordman is right. Except you will need the boot that connects it to the passenger side kick panel, and remove the two body plugs in the firewall for the different heater hose routing.
You will also need to find bolts for the holes in the firewall that line up with the AC unit. Not to mention the ones that holt it up under that dash.
Also, if you have a fondness for your glove box you can forget about that because it will have to go to make room for the evap. The glove box door will just be for decoration when your done.

Hold on,John...I've had three different dealer a/c units and they all had their own fan for blowing air,but the heating fan, defroster etal.,stayed intact...Make sure you don't start tearing apart stuff that you don't have to...

I guess I'm having a hard time...its Friday you know. Are you saying it is a dealer add on or factory unit. I'm hoping it is factory and you take good notes and lots of pictures. I know Keith is going that route and he will take good notes, but I don't know when he is going to get around to AC. It starts getting hot here around March so I need to get mine done soon.

I do believe this is a factory model. It has all the right tags on it but I am not sure. This is a pic of the underdash unit, maybe someone can tell me which one it is. I will start a new thread on it as soon as I can get my pulleys to line up. That is the one thing holding me back right now.

John,I can't quite tell from the pics,...are the on/off and fan switches just underneath those vents or are they part of the heater/defroster switches that are mounted in the dash?...

Oh,...and where did you get the genuine, original, factory,Ford work gloves?

Yep, That factory.

Heavenlyfire,

I see that you will be working on your projects over the winter like me. These guys up north don't understand why we don't get a lot done in the summer. The winter is the only time we have where we can be in the garage and get dehydrated. The only problem w/ me is, I get off work at 4:30 and it gets dark by 5:30.

I started to reply to this post this morning with a fairly detailed step-by-step on how to install a factory A/C setup, complete with pictures, but the reply kept getting longer and longer and....then I decided I should just write up a tutorial for the site, so I can go into good detail and include a lot of pictures. I just got started on this. Give me a couple days to finish it up and hopefully all your questions will be answered. :D
