Cool thanks Keith. And yeppers dablack00, was way too hot this summer to get this stuff done. In the mid 60's now, perfect working on truck weather lol.

Wow Keith,

Have you already finished yours? I guess it has been a while since an update, but w/ the hollidays and the new little one, I figured, nothing was getting done. Yes, I think a good AC retrofit tutorial would be a very nice addition to the site.

Thanks
Austin

Oh no, I haven't done mine....in fact I haven't been able to even get to the shop in a while, with everything going on around here. Last weekend and all day yesterday I was working on remodeling our basement, where my computer room / den is located. Today I get to relax and head to the shop and tinker. :D

But the tutorial I'm putting together is (for the time being) just a list of what you'll need to do, along with diagrams and pictures. Then as I get to actually installing mine I can update the tutorial with better pictures and installation details. I made myself a few notes on things I need to measure/verify while I'm at the shop today to include in the tutorial.

However, I just decided to go ahead and post what I've got so far. The tutorial isn't linked to from anywhere else on the site except this thread (for now). I'm going to be updating it again this evening with a few measurements and such, and then I'll go ahead and puts links to it on the Site Index and Tech Papers pages. Go ahead and take a look and see what you think so far. Like I said, it's actually not an installation tutorial now, but a reader should still get a pretty good idea of what parts are needed, what holes need to be drilled, etc.

Thanks Keith,

I think this will really help alot of guys. Especially the guys down south. I drove my truck for 2 years w/ no AC, down here south of Houston. It got a little sticky for sure. Now that I have kids, I really want AC in the truck.

I seem to recall seeing that a/c configuration with the power knobs built in as well as with the controls incorporated in the regular heat/defroster switches...I'm assuming both were by Ford, but does anybody know if there was a particular year that they 'switched the switches',or am I just imagining things :hmm: ?...

No, any A/C setup which had control knobs and didn't replace the standard heater box wasn't a factory installation. All factory A/C installations from '68-on had in-dash controls for all A/C and heater functions. (There was no factory A/C option in '67.)

I looked at your files w/ other factory units and it looks like there was some kind of a switch at the very bottom to go from heat to a/c....most likely to just control the air flow the bottom of the unit(for heat) and the front vents for a/c...But the a/c was still turned on with the dash levers...Maybe that's what was confusing me....

Ok, got the underdash unit put in today, the electrical hooked up. Now I just have to figure out which control line goes where?

So did you have to drill out the holes in your firewall to:

1. Bolt on the unit
2. Provide access holes for the hoses.

If so, how'd that go?

Ya, DC, I did. It wasn't hard after Keith told me about the demples. The one hole for the mounting bolt was easy. The other for the hoses was a little more challenging. First of all, it has the 2 small demples for the hold down screws and one for the center hole. The challenge was getting anything back there to cut or drill the hole. Of course the carb was right in the way.

Well I gave it a shot and no go. Now I need help. I have 4 cable connectors on the control panel but only 3 cables. Does the 4th one go to the water lines? And if so, where does the water hook up to this thing? How does the heat work, is it water, freon or electric?

the water should hook in through the firewall directly to the heater core. if we didn't have so much snow i could go out and look at my cables but i thought minw only had three cables. i do know that one of the cables probably the hot/cold slider should hook to the valve on the outside of the cab just before the heater core. the other one of my cables operates the inside door of the heater box.

That is the way it was before I put in the a/c unit. Now my control panel has 4 and the back of the a/c unit does not have anywhere for the water to hook up.
