Horn

Post by FunbapFord »

My horn doesn't work. It has the original steering wheel and the spring inside the center part. Seems like I remember in my younger days there is supposed to be something in there that makes contact to make the juice go to the horn under the hood. Theres nothing inside the center but the spring. I need a horn sometimes to move the dogs out of my way, encourage people to go ahead and turn after slowing to a crawl and having their turn signal on for 3 miles, and for drawing attention to my purty truck! hehehe

put a hot wire to the horn just to test it and see if it works. It might not be getting juice.

ther is a button with alittle spring on it around the outer hub of the wheel. when the spring is grounded by the horn ring. it works. i'm not talking about the rather large spring between the wheel and the collum either. i would check to see if that button is still in place and in good condition. it might be as simple as that.

Here's a photo (not too good) of the little burfnaggle that fordman is talking about. It's called a horn contact spring assembly in one of my after-market books.

Looks like a good photo to me!!

I need to pull my steering wheel off to clean that contact. It works most of the time unless the wheel is in a CERTAIN position-luckily it works when I'm driving straight!!

The pic above shows the contact spring under the steering wheel. If you are using a factory wheel then there is another contact type spring under the horn button/ring.

The steering wheel on the '71 F100 I just acquired is missing the horn bar and the cover plate. The horn works with a button placed under the dash to the left of the steering column (suppose it was added when the horn bar fell off). I'd like to replace the steering wheel completely with an original for the same make, color and model if possible. Any ideas on where to look?

ok, I know I am replying to my own post but well - hmm, just saw the posts to the steering wheel forum. maybe i should restore it which means just replacing the bar and cover and some sanding.

try posting in the parts wanted section first and then you can try the truck aftermarket companies and ebay.
