installing a/c

Post by 1972hiboy »

Hey guys, I have the opportunity to grab a factory a/c unit out of a 69 f100. It is 100% complete. both idlers and even the belt is still on the setup. Im assuming id have to grab everything from up under the dash. the heater/evap box the heater controls and everything off the front of the engine. Question is. Is this a major PITA? I mean if ihave everything its just a matter of bolting it in it right? The setup is in cherry shape so i thought it would be kinda nice to have a/c in my 72 f250. has anyone done this conversion before?

get the whole inside box and the dash controls. get all of the pulleys and brackets comprsore from the engine. dont forget the a/c lines or the condensor in front of the radiator.

I plan on taking every nut and bolt and control cable from the condensor to the glove box insert. All the pulleys and brackets becasue they move the location of the alternator with this setup. But it is doable? its not like anything in the body is made any differantly?

its a direct bolt in deal. no special thing to mod. it just swaps right over. the only thing different is where the heater core outlets come ofut of the firewall. you just have to drill out the new locations of the heater hose outlets.

I did take note of that when I saw it yesterday. That seemed to be the only real modification needed. Thanks for the input

mind if I but in and ask a quick (dumb) question? I have acquired a 69F100 with no air. I want air. What are my options? I assume there are several. Thanks in advance.

Slimy, I love your avatar pic! lol goober. You do have several options. Most 67-72 trucks ive seen have had dealer installed air. vs true factory air, dealer air was a seperate evap head with its own fan and thermostat controls on the unit...these units were normally under dash and usually contoured to the under side of the dash's shape. true factory air was a monstorous box that engulfed most of the under dash area and had a/c controls integrated into the heater controls. There are even companies out there that make new a/c units i think VINTAGE AIR is one of them if you want new vs used/old out of another truck. installing a true factory air setup is a big task vs a dealer installed unit. I wouldnt even attempt a factory air setup unless i have EVERY single piece to do the swap. You can find alot more dealer installed setups than a complete factory set-up and you can usually piece together what you need to make a set-up work with the dealer installed unit.
