How do i install a set of big rig air horns on my '69?

Post by alvald83 »

I picked a cool set of big rig horns from my brother in-law and want to mount them on my '69 f250 for that special occasion. I only have the 2 horns at this point. Since they are air horns, i tested them using my air compressor - great sound!

Has anyone set one of these systems up on our trucks? Whats involved?

Is it possible just to use a small air tank and just fill at home when needed?

You could setup a small tank on your truck that is feed off of an AC compressor. You would need some custom lines and a pressure switch so the tank wouldn't over pressurize. You could also put a 1/4 hose QD on it if you wanted to run compressed air for whatever reason.

If you set those off in town and startle someone into causing an accident, you WILL be held liable! I wouldn't use them.

Nope, some of my trips go through pretty close quarters, some in the dark and more than once I've about run over unlighted boats or fools swimming in the dark. My boat is fast and pretty quiet now, I usually run up on or over ducks and geese too...

Dad installed a set on his old motorhome. My brother and I give him the horns for christmas one year, he got a little air tank I think from a big rig he got that given to him from a friend, and he got a little air compresser from a lincoln town car from the wreckers. The highest price thing was the air control valve then wired that up with the wires off the horn. The hoses and pressure releif valve for the tank was from princess auto. I think he only run one horn at a time. There shouldn't be any differance than running a regular horn legal wise as you will only use it when needed. My uncle is a truck driver and they are starting to use train horns on them.
