Oversized shift boot?

Post by mr_josh »

My truck has a non-stock transfer case and as such, a non-stock shifter. The tricky part is, the pivot for the shifter isn't really close to the floor, it's actually quite a ways under the truck and because of this, the shifter has a long way fore and aft travel as it comes through the floor; it has about a 6.5" long slot in which to travel as it comes through the floor. It's been kind of tricky coming up with a solution for a boot to cover the massive gap which lets in the cold in winter and the heat in summer.

The first rubber boot that I had on there tore when I put it in 4-high for the first time, and the other one (a tougher one) just kept the lever from engaging 4-high all the way. I need a boot that has at least 6" of free travel front to back. Anyone know of a rig that has a similar lever setup that I can steal a boot from, or -failing that- ideas for making my own? I've thought about making one from bulk vinyl but I'm still having a hard time coming up with a decent design. Pics would definitely help if you've got 'em.

Thanks,

Josh

well maybe. the 73-79 trucks used a boot that was longer than ours. it bent slightly over the edge of the side of the hump cover. hers what they look like. of course this seller doesnt know jack smidt. it is for a 73-79 not a 67-72 originally. and the repros of this boot are about 20.00 i think. no where near what he is asking so do not buy this from him. just use it as a reference picture. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ford-Tru ... 519b14cdaf

another way to look for boots is too just search ebay for picture of shiter boots.
