Should I install Firewall Cover or not?

Post by pcheckie »

I just installed the carpet from ACC carpets( Great fit btw) on my 67 F100 4WD. I took out the old firewall cover, it could not be saved. Has any one NOT put a new Firewall cover back and just left it without one? Can you give me the pros and cons....the cost is 175 plus shipping from Carpenter...Thanks!!!

Pro: It's about an inch of insulation that helps keep engine compartment heat out of the passenger compartment.

ACC does make great products and I've used them for years. Beats getting an old carpet remnant and messing around trying to make it look right. How about a pic of the carpet installed!? We would all like to see.

you dont have to buy a new one. but you should put one back in. you can use insulation and carpet on it. as they did in the ranger xlt trucks. jute carpet padding is a the same insulation ford used behind the firewall cover.

I drove my truck around during its build w/o a firewall cover and it got soooo hot inside the cab! It was about 100 degrees outside and like 120 degrees inside. I would definitely buy one.

Mine has carpet bout half way up firewall and thin insulation. Id put something back for heat. Pros to none.... You can hear the noises beter!! Cons.... Heat and noise! Maybe dynamat the firewall and continue the carpet up under the dash. Make sure you glue the carpet to the firewall good though. Guy didnt on mine and it fell off into the floorboard!

I was considering making my own firewall.

I had pretty good luck carpeting my truck myself from stuff from Lowe's for about ~$30 and 14 hours of time , I figured I could apply a similar principle to the firewall cover. The plan in my head is...

1. Remove the current one
2. Install some sort of insulation using spray adhesive (I'll continue to use what I put under the carpet, house insulation like dynamat that comes in a roll at Lowe's)
3. Go to Jo-Ann Fabrics and get some fake-leather vinyl/PVC/Pleather or other material that would look nice. Bust out a sowing machine and make some stitches in the bottom to simulate the look of the factory one (see picture)
4. Cutout holes and install using whatever method I please
