Windshield Wiper/Sprayer Question

Post by SANDHOG »

Not sure in which forum to post, so here we go. Installed a new washer pump but I can not get it to spray. All electrical seems okay, I just don't know how to actually make it spray. My guess is the wiper knob should be 2 stage, and I think the pump should activate & spray when pulled out, but I can not pull knob out or push it in, mine only twists each way which activates the wipers. Previous owner did install intermittent wipers (washer pump was never connected with PO) and may have changed something when installing the intermittent wipers. Pretty sure the washer knob is original & I have not yet removed the tiny screw which I think is how the wiper knob is removed. Is my only option at this point removal of the knob and somehow put it back in correctly (to make it pull) if indeed the washer pump is supposed to activate when pulled ? Unless I am overlooking the obvious, which could be the case.

Any ideas ?

Thanks in advance

I could be wrong but i believe even the intermittent switch is pushed in for washer pump.
I have the intermittent in my truck, with it almost snowing here-it's just a little too cold to go out and look.

NOTE: As described above, the '78-'79 wiper delay units are a plug-in swap into the '67-'72 wiring harness. Everything will work as intended.

However, in 1980 the wiper delay switch's plugs were slightly re-designed. The '80-'86 units will still plug into the '67-'72 trucks' wiring harness and all normal wiper functions will work, but one wire on the delay unit (the power wire to the washer pump) will need to be moved to supply power to the washer pump.

When you connect the main wiring harness to the wiper delay switch's harness, you'll notice that the lime-colored wire (the washer pump's power wire) coming from the main harness does not have a corresponding tab in the wiper delay switch's harness. You'll need to move the black/white wire from the wiper delay switch harness to the slot that will connect it to the lime green wire of the truck harness.

I reread your post. Should have read it more complete the first time

You say it has a delay unit installed, and your switch has two detents in it.
A regular delay switch has two detents one way, and long sweeping motion the other. If you don't have the long sweeping motion opposite the detents...you don't have a delay switch.
You have a stock 2spd switch with a delay box hooked up behind it.

Either way to activate the washer pump the switch should be a "push in" to activate. if your switch stalk does not push in. No worky, you need a new switch. I have seen a few that everything works but the washer, corrosion on the spring, and contacts inside. Wiper switches are not highly serviceable  Mostly pressed together, and everything likes to break when you take it apart.

Knightfire has an excellent point about the '80 and up switches. Double check that. It maybe why the pump never worked in the first place

Good luck with it.

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately, no quick fix for me. I think I do have the delay switch though. When the turn the knob to the right, the first click activates the wipers in a slow to medium speed. The second click activates the wipers in a med to fast speed. If the turn the knob to the left I do get activation with a long delay in between. I did notice that I could push the knob in but only about 1/16 of an inch (probably less) but no sprayer activation. Oh well, guess my next step is to remove the instrument panel and start from there. Another task added to the list...

1/16 is not too far off.

Before you go pulling everything out, check to see if you're getting power to the pump when you push the switch.

Could be a bad pump...

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

Assuming that we are talking about a bumpside and that you don't have any other reason the remove the intrument panel, you don't necesarily need to remove the intrument panel just to get at the wiper switch.

After some tinkering under the dash, I got the sprayers to work but they don't shut off. At least I can isolate my problem now. I found a loose green wire & plugged it into an open spot in the fuse panel and the motor definitely work. Just need to rewire correctly now. Thanks again everyone
