Wood Grain Vinyl on my 69 cluster

Post by hazelnut »

Nobody reproduces a cluster for a 69 ranger with the wood grain anymore and i wanted the interior to look right when it go's back together again. I started looking around to see who makes a adhesive teak woodgrain to use. I found a company named METRO Restyling that makes a teak but it was sold in long rolls and didnt want to buy a 50' roll for the little bit i needed. Started looking on eBay and found they sell it on there by the foot and bought 2 foot to try. Looks nice and wasnt to hard to install, Made a big difference to the cluster and thought i would pass it along to anyone thats looking to do the same to thier cluster. Heres a link to thier eBay for the woodgrain, And a picture of what my cluster looks like now.

that turned out great!
a few years ago i tried redoing a cluster with some old wood grain vinyl that my grandfather bought to redo his station wagons door ( the print on it looked about the same as the stuff you used)and i couldn't get the stuff to conform (and stick) to the slight curve (or indentation or whatever) in the cluster for the life of me -even after scuffing the crap out of the poor cluster in an attempt to get the crap to stick ,it kept on lifting up (sometimes days later) and i'd end up with a bubble in it when all was said and done......thankfully it was a spare that i was experimenting on
glad it worked out for you ,nice work!
- still got my first first car 20+yrs later : 69 f100 sorta kinda pretending its a Mercury M100 w/a 70 f350 sport custom cab (factory buckets) 67 grille with 69 ranger cooneyes 68 merc box and hood, some supercool fiberglass fenders i scored way back when, 76 f150 disc brake frontend..currently running a 90 5.0HO 4bbl/c4 auto & 3.50 posi...originally a 360/c6 f100 Ranger with dealer added towpack (incl. kelsey hays trailer brake),boxside toolbox, behind the seat stowage & belly tank...only original parts left on 'er are the frame, rear end, rear springs, and rear bumper...

Thank you everybody. Whateverman i was real pleased with how easy this stuff is to work with, Haveing to put it down in a sunkin area looked like it was going to be a pain when i started fooling with it. I cut a piece a little big in a U shape to start, cleaned the cluster good, test fit before pealing off the backing, and layed it on. I didnt get it where i wanted it to be the first try and had to pell it up. Thinking the first try was going to be a scrap piece but it pelled up and didnt mess up the vinyl. Second try turned out good and trimed to fit without getting any air bubbles. Was easyer than trying to install window tint IMO, and took about 30 minutes to install.

Great job. I have been kicking around about doing that. Now you have answered all my questions :woohoo:

Before deciding on an F600 panel, I was wondering how to redo my 69. That is an awesome replication of the woodgrain. You shoould market that to Dennis Carpenter.

Thanks, I bought the bezel a few years back from Carpenter and ask the counter guy why they didn't sell the 69 ranger clusters, He said that lots of people ask the same thing and it gets put in the suggestion box but that's all he would say. Carpenter's has a large building behind the manufacturing building that has lots of old cars and trucks in it that's open to the public on auto fair weekends. I remember the last time i went in there there was a restored black 69 ranger short bed that i was looking at and the interior was all teakwood except the cluster that was burlwood. Cluster looked out of place and i knew right then we were out of luck on having carpenter make the right cluster for our 69 rangers. I'm going to have some left over vinyl from doing a tailgate panel in a few days if anybody's wanting pieces big enuff to do a cluster PM me.

Sorry for not responding sooner, Couldn't log in until i downloaded Firefox to get back on site.
