window channel noise or vent window?
I can't tell if the wind noise I am experiencing is from the roll-up window or the vent window gasket. I have thought about taping one to seal it and seeing if there is any difference, then I figured someone on this site must have had the same problems. Anyone have experience changing just one and having it changing the noise level?

Re: window channel noise or vent window?
is it whistling?- cuz that would most likely be the vent window , sometimes all you need to do then is replace the latch on it because the plastic bit at the end is worn down too much to get it to seal

Re: window channel noise or vent window?
What about just opening one and listening for the noise to disappear?

Re: window channel noise or vent window?
My vent does that. Like Whateverman says... the nub wears or another possibility is the frame itself is twanging a bit from rot. Just push on the vent window at the front side and see if the pitch changes or it goes away. Another thing that can help is to clean the gasket really good. When they get dusty they'll whistle too. If it is the vent and cleaning doesn't get it the nubs are for sale in LMC if I'm not mistaken? Then there's always the old trusty match pack shim...

Re: window channel noise or vent window?
I changed all the gaskets on my passenger door and made it way worse!
The whistleing was driving me nuts. Finally I taped all the gaskets then removed one at a time till I found the whistling one. It turned out I had to glue in the vent glass gasket that buts up to the front window channel. (just like the instructions said) OOOPS. Now my bump is getting a lot quietter.

You mean you don't have a penny behind your vent window latch? Odd...

Re: window channel noise or vent window?
I have used a matchbook behind the latch for years, but it is hard to install driving down the road after using the window. What I usually do is install the matchbook in the fall and it stays there until late spring. But I digress, the noise I am experiencing is more of a wind noise than a whistle, if that makes sense. I would almost say it was a design problem, but I doubt it. I had a 1970 F-100 in 1974 and it didn't sound like this and it had the same window design. (I miss that truck) How about door gaskets, do they make noise when old>

Oh ya I still have all that... it's just in my ash tray in case I need it!19agin wrote:![]()
A penny AND a folded up business card! Quiet as a church mouse...sorta.

Back to the noise though if it's not a whistling sound, more of a wind noise. Could it be the upside down U shaped gaskets on the door hinges, Or possibly the cold air intake boot on the passenger kick panel?
On my truck I installed 95 f150 inner wheel tubs. This was an easy install and it kept a lot of air from making it to the door area. (It also stops all the dirt from making into the inner door sill.)
And one more question does your window rattle at all? Could it be your window seal? O.K. that was two questions.

Re: window channel noise or vent window?
I have to use a nickle on my vent window even after all new door, window and vent seals and gaskets from DC.
I really hoped it would be quieter than it is.
What kind of mirrors are you using?
When I did the back yard restoration on my 71 F100 I went back with the stock car type mirrors. It was much quieter but I felt I just couldn't see anything behind me. I have used west coast jr. type of mirrors for so long it was making me nervous driving without them. Dad put them on my truck soon after he bought it so they have always been on them
So the bigger the mirror the more wind noise you'll hear also.

Re: window channel noise or vent window?
all of the change and matchbooks you found under the floor mat when you bought the truck.....now you know. im doing the same experiment on mine. i have the westcast jr mirrors that i suspect is the majority of my noise. but i also know that there are small gaps in the wing seal and the window seal. good luck.

Re: window channel noise or vent window?
I also have those big mirrors on both sides of the truck, but I think it is a combination of old parts and gaskets. I suspect the window channel felts and the door gaskets are contributing with the vent window supplying a high pitched noise at high speeds. If I have the money, I will redo the doors this summer and see if that helps. This would be along with repainting everything inside the cab, replacement door panels, a used seat from a newer truck, a used padded dash with fresh dye, and the list goes on....... All I need is time and money.
