Aftermarket Radio Help

Post by drizzie27 »

Ok i am trying to get a din radio in my 71-250. So my questions are.

1. Do I need a special wireharness like newer cars from metro or scoshe?
2. I noticed there are only two speakers in the truck where they are I don't know. So in assuming I can add the other two.
3. What is the amperage of a stock 71 alt?
4. If I don't need a wireharness what do I need to do exactly to instal the radio and work properly.
5. I already know about the Volvo dash kit.

Thanks

:hmm: Here's my limited knowledge answers,but I just put a stereo in a 67 and it works....nothing fancy,but a good one

1...probaly not going to find any app's for our trucks...not that they would have the correct wiring to a modern stereo anyways. The 3 main wires for our trucks...Red-key start power,Yellow-12vhot(may have fuse in line or on the stereo)wire for memory and Black---make sure you get a good ground.
2...as far as I know, our trucks only had one and its above the original radio...mounted to the bottom of the dash. You can add however many you want :D
3...I believe it's 65,but not positive
4....refer to the 1st answer......good luck
I've had enough and I'm not alone

Do yoi know if the harness that lmc offers for radios and speakers is worth the money? It's supposed to help with the amperage draw from the aftermarket items along with aftermarket headlights

i use to install radios at Circuit City a few years ago before they went under.

the amperage draw you will hardly notice as long as the speaker rating doesnt go past 50X4 meaning 50 watts per channel. the one thing that you will want to make sure of when you hook up the radio is that you don't attach a power wire that gives current all the time. as far as the speakers our trucks only have the one under the dash. my plan is to create a template to hold 2 3" dual cone speakers for the stock location then building a custom cabinet behind the seat to hold 2 6x9's and a 10" woofer. the plan for wiring in the radio is to use the red, yello and black wire from the harness then run new speaker lines.
