I got my first bumpside truck today. SWB 1967 F100 with a 240 6-cylinder and 3-speed on the column. I've posted in the engine section as well, but I got a transmission question. My truck is already set up for a manual transmission. It's a column-shifted 3 speed. My ultimate plan is to install a 390, and I'd like to keep a manual transmission in it. I would honestly be happy to find a 3-speed transmission that is compatible with a 390 and just keep the column shift mechanism. The truck isn't going to be a hot rod anyway. So I got two questions:
1. If I find a 390-compatible 3-speed and keep the column shift, what kinds of additional parts will I need to make it work? I'm asking about clutch levers, bell housings, clutch, all that kind of stuff.
2. Is it possible to make a 4-speed toploader from a car work with a floor shift? I'm asking this purely out of curiousity, and just wonder how hard that would be to make work.
Thanks in advance

1967 F-100 240/3-speed SWB bought from original owner. Soon swapped to 302 or 390

Re: 1967 F100 6-cylinder to 390 swap (transmission question)
Welcome fslay0435. Your swap is pretty straight forward. I read your post in the engine section and wanted to see what you had in mind for a trans before answering. The 6 cylinder engine stands are the same as 390 stands but they have to be relocated on the crossmember. The bolt holes are already there. The trans you have will bolt up to the 390 bell housing allowing you to keep your column shift with no mods. You will definitely need a bigger rad to handle the 390. You'll also need the clutch bellcrank pivot that bolts to the block from an FE series ( 352,360,390 ) powered truck to make the cluch linkage work. Throttle linkage will be different also. I can't remember if 6 cylinder and V8 used different gas pedals but hopefully someone who knows will chime in. For the small stuff you might be able to find a donor truck in a salvage yard. Ford used the FE series engines all thru the bumpside ( 67-72 ) era and in dentsides from 73-76 so you should be able to find the stuff pretty easily.

You'll need a different accelerator pedal/assembly for the FE.

The 4 speed toploader is a bolt in swap on a shortbed.

Set up is the same. Needs tires and a clutch for $600? Unless it's a total POS I'd say grab it.72lwb wrote:I have pretty much the same question but Im looking at buying a 72 lwb again but its a240,6cl with the 3 on the tree (bad clutch) I want a floor shift is the set up the same or were there any changes I need to worry about?
