What's the Original Steering Wheel Supposed to Look Like?

Post by hmills »

This is a 1971 F100 Sport Custom. As you can see on the attached photo my steering wheel is incomplete. Does anyone have a photo of what it is supposed to look like with the horn cover and bar? I guess the horn bar has some contacts that when pushed cause the horn to sound. I'll be looking around here in Houston for a parts yard for this ole truck.

The wheel also has some corrosion that I think could be sanded away and a few cracks (that I guess could be filled with epoxy). Has anyone out there tried sanding their steering wheel down to a fine (1000 grit) and gotten it back to looking "almost new" again?

Your photo did not show up. I have the horn cover, plastic backing and the metal back. I think it is black. I also have the steering wheel, its green and not in good shape. Let me know.

A Sport Custom should have a Black Camera case horn bar. You can get them from NPD or D-C.

You could try this, or buy (and paint) a new wheel.

thanks 68 swb - a joker in every crowd. glad to know there's someone else out there with a good sense of humor

yeah i thought it looked like a coat hanger too

there's another post out there on repairing steering wheels that has a link to a product (can't remember the name right now) but it seems like alot to spend ($79) on epoxy and sandpaper. am i wrong? maybe the value is in the instructions. don't get me wrong - i know nothing about it. maybe i could be convinced otherwise.
