Speedometer

Post by 1970 Hi-Boy »

Does anyone in the wide, wide world of Ford Trucks, know why the speedometer in my 1970 F250 Hi-Boy, has a red line from 70 to 100 mph? So in other words what am I risking if I exceed 70 mph? I can't even find anything about it in the owners manual. Surely Ford must have had a reason for doing this it would stand to reason, I just do not know what that reason is. Looking for the real deal answer, anybody? :?

The real deal answer? Dunno.
Some reasonable guesses: as a warning -that you are driving at a speed faster than the drum brakes can safely stop
-that the engine is revving pretty high at these speeds
-that these old trucks get pretty floaty at higher speeds
- still got my first first car 20+yrs later : 69 f100 sorta kinda pretending its a Mercury M100 w/a 70 f350 sport custom cab (factory buckets) 67 grille with 69 ranger cooneyes 68 merc box and hood, some supercool fiberglass fenders i scored way back when, 76 f150 disc brake frontend..currently running a 90 5.0HO 4bbl/c4 auto & 3.50 posi...originally a 360/c6 f100 Ranger with dealer added towpack (incl. kelsey hays trailer brake),boxside toolbox, behind the seat stowage & belly tank...only original parts left on 'er are the frame, rear end, rear springs, and rear bumper...

You might not be old enough to remember...
Your truck was made just prior to when the NTSB here in the USA dropped the speed limit nationwide to 55 MPH. So even then over 70 was illegal in ever state.
An educated guess-not "the real deal" by no means... :D

Too young for sure, I was born 2 years prior to the truck being built at the San Jose plant, would it being built in California have anything to do with it possibly? :maybe:

It is just what Basketcase says... the point at which you exceeded the maximum speed limit.

The older cars have the same thing... and some of them even had dots on the speedo hat told people when to shift too....

I thank you guys for replying. That does make a lot of sense after you mentioned it, I hadn't considered that before. So now I know, I risk a ticket when I'm on the Interstate. Better than all the other horrible possibility's I've conjured up over the years. Thanks again. :D
