Which axle gaskets?

Post by sargentrs »

1970 F100, 131" WB, 2WD, Single speed (Ford 9") rear axle. According to this schematic http://www.fordification.com/tech/image ... ential.jpg there should be two identical gaskets (#1001 in group 4234). IIRC, there was only one metal shim type gasket on mine when I took it apart.

I ordered one gasket from the local parts store and got this

It's a thick gasket like material. So is the one I bought going to work? One or two on each end? If not, where can I get the metal one? If it's the metal one, do I use sealer? Should it be one metal and one gasket type? So many questions! As always, any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Randy,
Hoping someone else will pipe in here too. Seems like I remember my 76 EB's nine inch rear having the foam type and the metal type when I first tore into it. I can also remember having to tear into it, and only having silicone to put it back together with-and not having any further issues. I don't think the metal one is for shim purposes. I believe there is plenty of give and take on the splines as far as gasket thickness is concerned.
Maybe check with these guys also:

Yeah, me too. I know the bearing itself acts as the seal as evidenced by the rust and crud on the outside of it. The inside seems to have been semi lubricated. Interesting design idea. That metal gasket was a snug fit around the bearing, I actually had to rotate and work it off around the bearing, so it would not have allowed a lot of moisture to get past the bearing but it does allow some. I don't believe the thick paper gasket is going to provide as much protection.
