I've been looking for a replacement auto tranny for my 79 or a manual with overdrive and saw an AOD listed in the pape listed with a parts truck for sale. But haven't gotten a call back yet.
Is there an AOD that can replace our C-4? This isn't going to be more than adaily hauler. Will the 4 speed maual the tall 4th speed from the 80's trucks fit a 79 with a 302?

The aod will bolt in place of a C-4. The AOD is a longer tranny so you will have to cut the driveshaft to fit and move the rear support to match.
Not a big problem since the factory has extra holes that will work.
The big thing to remember with the AOD is to hookup the throttle valve or the tranny will burn up.
This is what looks like a down shift lever but actually controls how much fluid the tranny gets, so hook up the "downshift" lever and all should be okay that way.
The other thing to keep in mind is that the AOD has a small block pattern and will not fit a FE or a 460.

re: AOD
Good advice. The AOD is a good smallblock tranny. If your gonna get
a used one, see if you can pull the pan before you buy. If you see any
glitter at all, pass on it. The throttle rod has to work right!!!! If not the
tranny will be toast in no time. It controls line pressure to the bands and
clutches, and shift timing too. It works like the modulator on a C4.
Other than that, it's a pretty strong box. Bigger clutches than a C4. And

Thanks Guys
Turns out that the seller is building a 69 Mustang - and he's local. This is a big deal because I'm deep in Chebby country. He claims it's rebuilt and wants $200. May possible help with the install.
Think I'm going to go for it.
