Crazy C6 Question
I'm converting my 68 F100 Ranger from a 3 speed manual to a C6. I found all the parts including a truck C6. When the parts came, I looked at the transmission and checked the fluid. This transmission was supposed to be out of a 71 F100 in a wrecking yard. The transmission and converter are very clean and the fluid is like new. I had planned to rebuild the trans before putting it into my truck, but now I'm think about giving it a try as is. All I can lose is time and I have lots of that. What's the chances it will work?

Re: Crazy C6 Question
Phil, first I would look at the pan/gasket for an indication that the pan has not been off as of late & new fluid installed...
It is common practice to change the fluid & filter if the trans is acting up, then replace the trans if that doesn't fix it..Caution here.
Has the converter been kept in the tranny & the dip stick in the tube....? if so this is good
If the fluid is nice & red & does not smell burnt & it is a 2 WD & you feel lucky.....Hey, give it a go...You have lots of time?
It is an easy install.........Do you know the history or the PO?
You may get opinions from others that differ from mine.....There are other good tranny men on here.......Donnie

good advice here. its funny that most people will changed fluid and filter only if its starts having problems however by then its usualy to late and the fluid filter service should have been done through the transmissions entire service life. If the junkyard pulled the trans out of the truck that may be a good sign. I dont think anybody would junk thier truck becasue of a trans? I could be wrong though. Id maybe drop the pan and look at the inside. if its clean and you dont mind the possibiblity of doing the job again then hey you got nothing to lose.

Re: Crazy C6 Question
Thanks for the comments. I'm still on the fence about the rebuild. I love doing things myself. Over the years, I've rebuild dozens of motors and a couple of Ford T-10s and Toploaders. I played with a C4 in a Mustang race car back in the seventies, but never tried a C6. I may buy one of those C6 rebuild CDs and a couple of special tools and give it a try. I may also put the transmission in the truck first just to see where I am. We're having fun now...
