speedometer going nuts...

just installed a new cable and now the speedometer is going nuts! speeds up ...slows down...while I'm doin the speed limit...is the speedometer bad? I have another one that works fine, but the mileage will be off..how can I change it to the right mileage? Thanks! 67 ford f100...

Sounds like the cable is binding or some gears are missing teeth.

Definitely sounds like binding. Either it's got a less than minimum radius bend somewhere that you need to relax by re-routing, or, you kinked it somewhere (usually at the end when hooking up the dash), or the cable is dry and grabby and is asking for a little lube (grease)...

if the needles freakin out and jumping all over its most likely the cable binding,if its not jumping around,check out the speedo gear the teeth can get chewed off if the cable binds up for too long
- still got my first first car 20+yrs later : 69 f100 sorta kinda pretending its a Mercury M100 w/a 70 f350 sport custom cab (factory buckets) 67 grille with 69 ranger cooneyes 68 merc box and hood,some supercool fiberglass fenders i scored way back when, 76 f150 disc brake frontend..currently running a 90 5.0HO 4bbl/c4 auto & 3.50 posi...originally a 360/c6 f100 Ranger with dealer added towpack (incl. kelsey hays trailer brake),boxside toolbox,behind the seat stowage & belly tank...only original parts left on 'er are the frame,rear end,rear springs,and rear bumper...

Another one, make sure the exhaust isn't cooking it. I lost one to that.

Be sure to use graphite grease.The others will attract dirt and become thick and gummy and case more problems. :thup:

Speedomters seems to be a problem issue with our trucks. I cleaned and greased mine but it still jumped around. So I bought a new one from lmc. A few months later speedometer back to jumping around. I guess there is something good about electronics after all :lol:

i had the same problem turned out to be the speedometer it would squeal really loud too
