T56 seems like the single reasonable solution for what you want.

Car trannies in trucks is a gray area. If you use the truck like a truck you blow them apart.

So if I wanted a t56 and didn't use my truck for hauling or pulling anything, I would be ok?

They aren't weak transmissions, just made for a completely different use. You can bang gears with 1000 HP in a 3000 pound car and a 150 pound car transmission will hold it fine. If you put 150HP and 400 lb/ft of torque through that same transmission pulling trailers around it won't last long at all.

A WC T5 won't last behind your 390. Here is a vendor for a ZF5 to FE adapter: http://www.high-impact.net/zf_5&6spd.htm

Regardless of which way ya go, it's gonna cost upwards of $2200 to $3000. Personally, I would go with a new TKO-500 and a QuickTime bellhousing ...don't forget to add a new clutch and flywheel.

Yep, the Tremec 3550's or TKO's have great gearsets, about 2x the T5 gearsets in tickness and the shaft spacing makes the torque rating.
