transmission alignment

Post by wndsofchng06 »

Anyone got tips or tricks to get the 4 spd back in? I've fought with it 4 hrs now and am like a half inch from having it flush against the bell housing.......

Have you tried putting it in gear & turning the output shaft? If you are using a tranny jack, I would get 4 longer bolts & cut the heads off & use them as guide pins. Cut screwdriver slots in them for easy removal..
If you are using only your chest & arm muscles & have been at it for 4 hrs, be sure to pull it out after each attempt, what I mean is : don't let it hang on the splines of the clutch disc or there is a chance of warping the disc.
Did you use an alignment tool as you tightened down the cover bolts........You may be missing the pilot bearing......donnie

Yea all arms....they feel like jello now.... I did use the alignment tool but I'm considering unbolting the pressure plate enough to be able to turn the disc. I've had my a friend bump the starter while trying to push forward, no dice! I need a lift! ha ha

If you are bumping the starter, put the trans in lo or rev....this will keep it from trying to turn, sort of.........it can still turn but it will have a bit of not free wheeling....if you are into the disc, bumping the starter while in gear will turn the output shaft... I would use a bump starter & not the Ign.....this will tell you if you are into the disc & the pilot bearing is giving you a fit...one or the other... take a break, talk to it, & come back fresh..........You are almost there......good luck, Donnie

By arms alone is doing it wrong...

Some headless bolts will get you close.

Then use your finger to check the gap between the tranny and bell at the bottom anf both sides. Wiggle the arse end until the gap is the same.

If the tranny is in gear and you can turn the output shaft just wiggle the arse end while turning the output shaft to get the splines to line up.

If you can't turn the output shaft then the clutch splines have linded up. If so, then use an adjustable wrench or a helper above to release the clutch while you turn the output shaft and slide the tranny into the pilot bushing.

Remember, gap even, splines engaged, pilot bushing.

Never try to use a bolt to draw the tranny into the bell

Thanks, yea I knew not to use a bolt..... what I hadnt though about was with the trans off the back the motor settled to the rear some.... I jacked up the rear of the motor a tiny bit and the trans slide right in! Now on to putting the header back on.... heat wrapping first as it is super close to the starter!
