Won't go into gear

Post by GSUeagles »

My 1972 F100 with a 360 automatic is not going into gear correctly. Will go through all the gears and will eventually catch and then go out while I'm driving. What could be wrong? Thanks

C6. Check fluid level first on level ground, idling in park. Give more info; conditions, hot, cold, etc.

What exactly is C6? I just got the truck, it was my great grandfathers and he left it to me when he past away. I'm trying to get it running back great and restoring it. Any suggestions would be great. The transmission fluid is where it needs to be.

C6 is the type of transmission. Does the trans go into gear once it's warmed up?

It goes into gear once I start it from cold then a few feet later it goes out and like its in neutral and I have to slowly go through the gears several times until it goes back into gear then drive a little further and same thing. Even when the motor is hot it does the same thing. I'll be driving and it will just go out like its in neutral.

Truly sounds like the fluid level is low.

Thanks man you were right. I have realized now that I could have a leak. I have been told that before he past that the service place lost the plug and it has been leaking ever since. I am hoping that it's just leaking around that bolt. Is there any other place it could be losing fluid at?

Auto transmissions can lose fluid from many different gaskets, seals, etc. Some can even lose fluid through the modulator valve, if it is defective.
