Cost of converting a 3-on the tree to a C6 automatic

Post by JWTurner1951 »

What does it cost, in approximate dollars, to convert a three speed on the column to an automatic - parts and labor? I'm looking at a 1970 F250 that has a three speed on the tree (I know, it's pretty unbelievable, but...maybe I should question that?). If I purchase the truck I would look to convert it over to an automatic with the Ford C6. Your experiences and guidance are appreciated. JT>

Lots of variables in that question. For instance there is whether it is being done utilizing used parts or new or rebuilt parts. A donor vehicle would be easiest going the used parts route in my opinion. I seem to recall that the C6 needs the high hump transmission tunnel in the cab. Not sure which one you have but it is something to check when pricing the parts and labor. Also your location will have a good deal to do with the cost of parts and the labor. Then there is the question of which engine you have and which bellhousing would need sourced as well as any possible driveshaft modification. Then there is the problem of getting the correct radiator....transmission lines and assorted linkages for the shifter and downshift. I realize I havent given you any useful dollar and cents answers ....just threw out some things to think about.

( Edit ) I forgot to throw in there that if you go from a low tunnel to a high tunnel there is also the cost of replacing the floor mat or carpet as needed or desired.

This is a pretty straighforward swap but can be a real can of worms if not properly planned out. As has been mentioned, accessibility to a more or less complete parts truck is a real advantage for getting all the major and minor hardware needed for something like this, like linkage, column, flexplate, driveshaft etc. As non p/s a/t steering columns are a tad on the scarce side, you may also find yourself in for adding power steering as well if you don't have it. Again, a properly equipped parts truck is a gold mine here. The range of potential parts trucks would include '68-'79, depending on drivetrain. A rad isn't a big deal as you can hang an aftermarket cooler out front and you'll also have to remember to dig out the clutch pilot bearing from the rear of the crank so the torque convertor snout will fit. Been there :D

I'm pretty sure that the three-on-the-tree has the low hump. A 4 speed came with a high hump, but it would have a hole in it. The humps bolt to the cab, so getting one off the parts truck should be pretty simple.
And I THINK, but am not positive, that the tranny mount is different as well. I do not know if the crossmember would need to be moved.
